Had a tumble on my 08 DRZ400SM today Sad

Anyway, the handlebars seem straight still but the top yoke (headset) appears to be bent.

I've tried looking on ebay for parts but can't find anyway for the SM model.

Does anyone know if the top yokes from a older E or S model will fit?

The part numbers are the same according to this site

400SM -
https://www.cmsnl.com/suzuki-dr-z400-sm-usa_model15936/partslist/432835.html

400 E-
https://www.cmsnl.com/suzuki-dr-z400e-2000-2004-usa_model15931/partslist/89829.html

Thanks for any help

i doubt the yokes are bent. i smacked my r6 into the back of the car and they were fine. my frame wasnt though.

i came off my ktm once wheelieing and it cartwheeled off and smashed into a kerb. forks twisted in the yokes and the bars slightly bent. took 5 mins to fix.

i suggest you have a closer look.

Hmmm, really? Well maybe i do need to have a closer look then. I got work now until next monday so will have to do it then.

The part where the bars are bolted to is what appears to have moved/bent, the clamp that holds them in was pushed up against the clock but now it isn't straight which made me think the yokes were bent.

I'll try to get a pic uploaded tomorrow as that probably doesn't make much sense. Very Happy

Thanks for the reply though & like i said i'll try to get some pics uploaded.

I'm guessing it's bent the bolt or pulled the bolt out of the tapped hole (i believe they are only cast alluminium anyway)

Either way, an E/S yoke won't fit. They both use RWU forks so the diameter where the forks clamp is smaller by quite a large amount.

Ok, thanks for the replies. I didn't think they would fit but it was the part number that confused me.

I've since spoken to my friend & i think i misunderstood what he said slightly Embarassed

It isn't the top yoke that needs replacing, it's the clamps that bolt the handlebars to the yoke.

Sorry about that, all that serching for yokes was a complete waste of time. Oh well it's a noobie mistake i guess!

Should be some pics below if i can get it to work right.

Thanks again for the replies.

If i remember rightly the clamps aren't removable from the yoke. Well obviously the top half of the clamps are. Could be wrong though.

If they are the standard issue Renthal Fatbar then i'll be suprised if they are still straight and your clamps are bent. The Fatbar's best VERY easily.

If they do turn out to be bent and you can't get a bit of pipe on them to bend them back, when you get some new ones, make sure they are the right diameter. Most bars are 7/8" (around 22mm iirc), the Fatbars are 1 1/8".

So that includes the Renthal Fatbar's, Renthal Twinwall's, some of the Pro Taper bars. They aren't cheap either Sad

I got some Pro Tapers from when i had my YZF that should go on ok, so no worries about that.

Just not sure if it is the bars or something else that's bent.

Notice the top clamp isn't straight under the clock like it should be.

From the pics i would say it is your bars that are bent, it's hard to tell.

Do the bars/clamps look straight to the yoke? I wouldn't rule out the bracket (that the clocks go onto) being bent.

looks like the actual riser may be very slightly twisted if its all connected being one piece. if ya take the bars off then check by looking at it off, if that make sense to you

I have the same problem on my sm after dropping it, if you take of no:9 in the parts diagram HOLDER, HANDLE, UPPER and place on a flat surface you'll probably find its warped like my one..............................Email me if you find somewhere that sells them at a reasonable cost

On mine (drz400sm k7 08) the damage is the other side and not as severe.
I think it's a combination of the bars and clamp fittings, so I stripped the clamps down to take a look.
They're held into the yoke by 4 rubber mounts, two nuts & bolts, the risers and the clamps. See the drz parts fiche at Ron Ayres (link below).
I checked everything was straight with a lazer and after I put it back together the bike ran straighter but the clamp was still out and the bike still dived to the right under braking.
However before I fork out £60 for new fat bars I'm going to try rubber killers.
