Dog as food?

So, having found myself in 'dog eating country' in Thailand, and having made a couple of vietnamese friends who enjoy taking a farang for dog...

What's the general view on it?

I'm of the persuasion that animals bred for food are fair game, and there are worse conditions for most livestock in said countries, and pigs are infinitely more intelligent then dogs (and cows are sacred in certain places) so those arguments are fairly shakey.

As for being a dog lover, I'm well known for being a lover of animals and tend to prefer the company of dogs/cats to people the vast majority of the time. Started today off petting a puppy while waiting to do my bit on stage (Thai schools are FULL of stray dogs, and this puppy happened to wander right to the front of a 3000 strong assembly outside Cute thing, sharp teeth though ), and after getting back from the dog noshing session this evening went and bought food for my bosses dogs (again ) as he doesn't feed them (they hunt flies bless em).

So, thoughts? Squeamish? Conscientious objector? Worried you won't be able to look 'Lucky' in the face again afterwards?

Oh, and some pics. Dog 'restaurant' has some resident dogs there that are well used to eating dog. Still bloody fun feeding them dog though, whilst cackling maniacally.

'Strongman' soup in S.Korea - slow cooked to tenderise the meat and heavily spiced, more like a stew really.
Supposed to increase your sexual vigour.

It was ok, not something i'd have again though when 'better' meat is on offer. Korean dog eating stems back mostly to the austerity of the war years, and generally isn't 'advertised' to westerners.

First time I ate dog it was a roadtrip to meet some vietnamese, who made a big fuss about making it authentic style. The duck they did was epic, but the dog suuuuuuucked. Was just on the bone, and had to get gnawed off with fat included on almost all. Was just one long fat dodging/eating session. Although dog liver and intestines are a very odd experience, yet actually pretty good

This 'restaurant' however lets you pick your own cut (literally, a huge cooler box of dog slabs) and my friend Jai is an expect at picking out good stuff. It's like a cross between beef and pork, actually really good. And they have big chunks of meat in the first plate, choice cuts as it were. Basically just eat them plain, but next time I might bring some bread and mayo Kind of meat that would REALLY suit mayo.

After that comes all the fatty bits. Which is where dog feeding happens mostly.

I bought back a bag of fat to said hungry dogs. There was a lot of whimpering and they ran off, so it's true, god knows how a hungry dog differentiates... but they do. Only so curious after reading about Amundsen feeding his sled dogs each other strategically... which was ingenious. But it was a big point that only eskimo dogs would willingly.

I have absolutely no problem with it. Have even accidentally eaten shark fin soup out here (although I definitely DID have a quiet word to the host about that afterwards), so cats and dogs are certainly not sacred.

Although there was a funny moment when (funnily enough in the Dog House at work) we were showing each other pics we had of our dogs on our phones, my Newfoundland, Davie's Puppy English Mastif and Mario's Great Dane we asked Hein the Vietnamese Driller what he though and he just turned round and said "Yummy"

Personally, Because of my two labs which i love to death i could never do it. But I'm not going to be arrogant enough to force my opinion onto other people.

I do however object if the dogs are kept in piss poor conditions, i remember a documentary on channel 4 about a place where they sold Dog and they had an Alsation outside which they tied up and just chopped the leg off which was all they needed and then let it bleed to death.

Hall-al butchers are even worse, they will slit a goats throat and hang it up by its legs kicking and screaming in front of the other goats (and they're intelligent enough to know what's going on)

I am quite proud of the fact in Britain we stun the animals and it is done as humanely as is possible in production.

I make a conscious effort to only eat meat that comes from animals that have been reared, housed and killed in a manner that I agree with. If I lived in a country where dogs were bred and kept for eating and they were kept appropriately and killed in a decent manner then I probably would eat the meat.

However, more often than not when I've been travelling in the Far East I've not approved of the way most livestock is kept let alone killed, so I have tended to adopt a vegetarian diet, which to be fair has been what the locals eat anyway. They seem to eat meat only on special occasions so that suits me too.

I love dogs, but i'd eat it. Its probably just stray dog and is probably quite commonly eaten in the more rural parts. People are poor and can't see the point of spending money and time traveling somewhere to get pork or shrimp. It makes a lot of sense to get rid of the stray dog problem by eating them. Morally i have no problem with it. I expect they taste crap, but i'd try it anyway.

I ate some dog curry when in China...it wasn't as nice as it looked in Vietnam, but my then I'd switched to tofu or vegetables only...after being round the food markets...!!

The dog meat I had was dark orange in colour and swimming in fat, so I ended up eating the rice more so than the meat bit. I didn't know what it was until later.

Had it been grilled or fried, I think it would have been more appetising. The meat on your dish in the picture looks edible enough.

Yup I'd eat dog - but I thought you were concerned about the build up of toxins in higher level carnivores?
