Hi, having a bit of trouble figuring out why my bike (actually brother's bike) runs great when jumper leads connected but stops completely dead (no hesitation or spluttering/loss of power) the instant they are removed. I've covered all the usual bases(for a c*r), but I'm new to the bikes game so any pointers would be greatly appreciated. The battery is dead flat, but i wouldn't have thought that was the problem( If you know better please tell me!) and the bike is an "82 suzuki gsx250 if that makes any difference. Any tips at all would be awesome, cheers.

Hi

Entirely possible that a very dead battery will kill the engine like that. Especially if the charging system is dead (and 1980s Suzukis were notorious for dodgy charging systems).

Check that the voltage over the battery goes up when you rev the engine. If it doesn't then the charging system is likely fried, so no electrical power once the jump leads are disconnected.

All the best

Keith

Not sure about your bike, but some bikes of that era had an electromagnet generator ... you therefore needed to have a good battery to keep this alight ...

Either way, you deffo need a new battery before looking any further! Thumbs Up

I replaced the battery, spark plugs and fuel, now the bike runs sweet, so cheers again for the advice.

Many thanks,
