I have a pair (at least) living under my shed, they roam around the garden, stalk the guinea pigs and generally look evil. One is called Bertie.

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/notbertie.jpg

The fact that my garden looks a bit like Steptoe's yard probably doesn't help, but I only have a small shed to store my crap so there is inevitable overspill, and the shed is manky and rotting. I am replacing it this year, but haven't the cash at the moment, and i'd rather the rats were gone before I do.

Have already had an expensive trip to the vets thanks to a dog to poison interface, so poison is out.

I have bought a rat trap cage type thing, but it requires the Rat to do a mini assault course to get stuck in it, rather than just wander in, and I doubt a rat (being fairly intelligent, as I understand) will be up for that. Whilst there is free food about for less hassle - the guinea pigs are untidy eaters and fussy so have been known to throw leftovers from the Penthouse window.

If anyone has any advice, or links to humane traps that work i'd be rather interested.

There is the usual minefield of products out there that are clearly a load of crap.

PS. I don't care about humane, i'm gonna drown the bastards when I catch them, it's just I can't have anything that is going to cause harm to the dogs, who are thick (yet lovable).

Many thanks.

The Victor rat trap, cost around £4 each from farmy type shops. Failing that you can borrow my jack russel.

You need to buy a cat or borrow a Jack Russell. A cat is the best way to keep the rat/mice down.

Air rifle?

That's bullshit!

It's a small garden, close quaters combat... need one of these instead!

Actually, no..

TWO of them and a red tie around your head rambo style.

It's quite a humane method (as you'll miss every shot) but it shows your neighbours you're doing something about the rat problem Thumbs Up

You'll need open sights or a parallax adjustable scope. Rat shooting is close up work, too close for most scopes.

you have the perfect excuse to get yourself an air rifle! I would suggest getting a pistol too, for the final execution shot.

In fact, why not get a crossbow instead?

I think you need to film your sniper session!

There seems to be a trend forming, violent bunch on BCF are we? Smile

Question, when an air rifle is advertised as "full power", is this still below the 12ft/lb limit that requires a firearm certificate?

You probably don't have just two rats but a whole family of them.

You could try poison and keep the dogs inside for the duration. Then when you think there are no more rats, clear and clean the garden out before you let the dogs loose there again.

Or train one of your dogs to catch rats.

As said, either an air rifle or a Jack Russell.

Shotguns are pretty effective too though, i used to live on a farm that one year had thousands of the little fuckers running around - the guns saw some action that week Thumbs Up

You can borrow my Jacko if you like, he hasnt seen any vermin yet so could do with a 'taster' Mr. Green Thumbs Up

Find a local scrote who has loads of terriers. Buy them (no not the dogs) a packet of fags and get the dogs in your back garden. Tilt the shed up and the rats will run and the dogs will take them out.

It's what I done with my outhouse. Then cemented the holes up and haven't had a problem since.

Air rifle.

("Full power" generally means full legal power without FAC, ie just under 12ftlbs).

Pick a place (where you can see it at night from your prefered window), do a bit of plinking in the day until you've got the sights zeroed there, and can hit a 2p every time.

That evening, put a brick in the place. Smear peanut butter and/or Nutella on the brick. Now there's food they like, but they have to sit out and eat it rather than drag it back to the nest. Don't worry about shooting. By the third night (fresh smears each evening), the rats'll be used their new feast and happy to approach it. Then sit in the window with the rifle and pick'em off Smile

Put the trap where the dog cant get at it. Under the shed is ideal. If your dog cant catch them anyway he isnt a real dog Razz

We have a restaurant next to our workplace and because they are not too concerned about leaving waste food lying around in the bins area we often have problems with rats. We've tried many trapping methods, the most successful being the Snap E Rat traps. They are the bollocks. You load them from behind so there's no chance of trapping your fingers (unless you're really, really stupid)and the kill rate is very impressive. They will set you back somewhere between £2.00 to £5.00 each depending upon source and quantity.

Another vote for the rifle, just be careful if you're using a rifle with reasonable power because pellets often ricochet back staight towards you, more likely in a small garden. Rats can be shot from quite a long way off, their skulls are so weak that a shot to the head will always kill them instantly in my experience, a shot to the body will most probably kill them fairly instantly too.

First, remove any food source. then find the nest, lay traps around the nest but away from your pets, remove any dead rats as soon as they are found ( another food source. Destroy the nest if you can. keeping things tidy does help, but even the most tidiest garden/home can still be infested.
Shooting the blighters does help too, but the basics must be done first.
