So, being an avid climber, being stretchy/flexible is kind of important to me.

I've NEVER been able to touch my toes (properly now, no bending knees!) or do the splits, I think I can get my legs apart quite far but not as far as I like.

There's a few climbs where being able to do simple things like this would actually help me be a much better climber!

Sp BCF massive, can you do it? Either of them?

And what's the trick to be able to do it? How do you gain such stretchiness?!

I'm about 4 inches of touching my toes in testing for your research, without stretches and warming up.

I get about a knee's height off the floor in doing the splits before my inner thigh muscles are begging me to quit. Laughing

I may try again tomorrow after I've had a jog. Thumbs Up

Oh and I didn't mean tricks as such. But surely you can train to be able to? To have better flexibility?

Well even I can still touch my toes but I never could do the splits
(and to be frank, I can't think why you would want to, its unseemly!)

When I first met him, mr hellkat could.
He tried to impress me by doing the splits, in full bike gear, whilst arseing about with his mates ... but he strained his thigh muscle, so (of course) I had to sympathetically rub Tiger Balm into it for several days Laughing silly old bugger Laughing

But he is quite sprightly for an old fart.
Gymnastic, almost, at times.

I tore my hamstring a while back and it has definately hindered my flexibility. That, and my ever burgeoning gut.
When warmed up, I used to be able to do full front splits (both sides) and was only a couple of inches away from side/box splits.
In terms of toe-touching, i could get my chest to my thighs easily.

Nowadays i rarely do any stretching, so my static flexibility has suffered greatly. Dynamic is still quite good, although i'm always very careful with my hamstring, and i think that holds me back mentally more than anything.

I've found it take a few days if you try one day and keep streching then try the next you will be much closer keep streching and you will be able to do it in a couple of days.

If I tried today I would be nowhere near but if I was bother I could do it in about 4 days. It is about streching the muscles down the back of your legs

I can see how doing the splits would be useful when climbing, but I cant see how touching your toes would be. When standing on a toehold, you cant lean forward, as there is a rock face in the way.

I do a bit of climbing sometimes, I need to improve with smoothness, and balance, and either lose weight or develop arm strength, so I can pull myself up a bit better.

Splits for men is silly, and dangerous. Snap you thigh ligament and it will spring back whap you in the nuts and kill you of pain.

Anyone who cant touch their toes is a fool. The only exception to this rule if you cant see them.

Palms on the floor is the real test, all easy for me as, being a celt, I have long arms and short legs.

How about sitting cross legged then getting up with out using hands/arms.

I can do side splits to the floor, but not a chance for front splits at the moment.

Pics on request.

Yoga or a combination of yoga and pilates is your answer. I've become much more flexible as a result of an hour a week of yoga. Thumbs Up

Edit: It's good for you balance too, which is essential for climbing. Very Happy

Plenty of times. I do bouldering more than leading/trad climbing and there's been times where I need to get my toe (at least) to match my left hand but haven't quite got the flexibility so I have to find another harder way. Sad

Leading/trad climbing you don't really need it, but being able to get your foot high is quite an advtange. There's a V6 climb I can do, but only because I can get my foot quite high and lift my weight using both arms and my foot. Thumbs Up

I guess I'm a fool Embarassed

Palms on the floor? I can't even touch my toes! Laughing

Cross legged and standing up? Easy. Never had a problem with that. Confused

A real test is laying back and having your feet flat on the floor so your knees are up. Get someone to hold your feet down and then try and stand up using no arms or hands. Then use a 10kg weight and do it again. So, frigging hard Laughing

Yes I did think that. Was going to join some yoga classes but unfortunately I had to cancel my monthly membership for the gym/climbing/classes/etc so would have to do it all at home by myself Sad

Pilates?

I've got good balance, really good at being able to find the perfect balance for certain moves. I remember a few guys we're trying one route and I was watching them try it and all failed in one particular move. Tried it, got my left leg instead of my right leg on the hold (as they were doing) and flagged my right leg up high and pointed it against the wall and just easily reached for the other hold. They were like "oh...right..." Laughing Mr. Green
