OK so once my XR is sold I'll be looking for a Yamaha TDM850 to use mostly for touring/distance trips... I'm really really busy at work at the moment and on a lot of training courses so I can't really go away for tooo long at the moment... which leads me to choose some UK touring up to a week at a time... I'm also buying a house this summer so will be a bit tied up with that too but at end of summer I hope to go to France etc.

So in the UK... what to do where to go etc? Suggestions, thoughts... pictures of inspiration gladly accepted. As much as I like the riding, I'd also like to see things etc along the way..

Also another question, in September I am on a training course in Dumfermline (sp) bearing in mind I live in PORTSMOUTH!!!! I am considering making a week of it and riding up there visiting places along the way, but is this a stupid idea in September?

Me and the Mrs did it last year, and have signed on for this year too. You'll get the list of landmarks a week before you can start, to give you time to research, and you've to submit your entry by the end of October. Landmarks are chosen either for the interest of the location itself or the ride to get there. Marking is graduated, so you can do as many or as few as you want.

As I see it it's just what you're asking for, in a list in one hit! Some historic, some quirky and bizarre, and some just in beautiful locations.

It really made us ride the roads less travelled, and showed us some great things we'd have never see otherwise, can't recommend it enough. Very Happy

In my experience September and October are usually the best months to go out and about exploring on the bike...it's when I usually pack up and go off myself (around the UK).

As to what to recommend, depends what you are into.

I personally like ruins, abbeys, castles, coastal routes, and interesting architecture. I could suggest a whole host of routes, it really depends on what you like to see when you are out. Question

I have been most places in the UK apart from north Wales, Cornwall, north of Edinburgh, northern Ireland, and most of the islands.

I've been going for the last few years (not on the bike though, that'll have to wait until my restriction is up) and I love it. Abersoch is great.

That's why I'm not going there on the bike until my restriction is up Laughing

There seems to be a lack of speed cameras in North Wales and I've never seen that many police about on my travels.

Have a look at this site for places to vist in around Scotland:

Does anyone know if there are any English and Welsh equivalents of this site?

I did a quick google and found these:

EDIT: 2 really shite sites, so I will have another look!! Rolling Eyes

Not sure how good they are, but I'm just going to do my 'test' by reviewing the Dorset info and seeing if I think that cuts the mustard and then I'll report back accordingly!! Mr. Green

Damn, these websites are shit.

I found them, posted and then went to review - I think they might be ok if you're a pensioner on a tour bus but other than that dreadful!! Confused

I'm still hunting but I'm thinking that sites like ADV Rider and other bike touring specific sites may offer better advice/routes and tried and tested destinations.

North wales is amazing for riding. You can speed like a bastard if you want to and the odds of getting caught are very low. To try to stop this happening they have tried to be alot harsher on those they do catch. North wales has been an advocate of extreme plans like loads of speed cameras etc as the area isn't well policed. But thats just due to a low population density and the resulting low police numbers.

I would highly recommend Alton towers on acid if your really stuck for things to do Laughing
