Quote:
While Triumph appears to be taking a "pass" on 2010, revealing only special editions of existing models instead of any genuinely new products, it's announced that seven new models are planned for release by the end of 2012. These new products should increase the diversity of John Bloor's products, currently arranged in three families -- Cruiser, Urban Sport and Modern Classic -- Triumph says it's adding four new ones. No word on what they are, but we're guessing there'll be some splitting up of the current families in addition to models in segments Triumph doesn't currently compete in.

One of the most glaring omissions from Triumph's current range is a genuine adventure tourer, since the Tiger went all upright tourer in 2007, the company has lacked anything capable of tackling even a fire road. We also expect to see the Urban Sport range split, with full-on sportsbikes like the Triumph Daytona 675 being spun into their own range that's separate from more city-oriented bikes like the Triumph Speed Triple.

Triumph's in a relatively strong financial position in comparison to its Japanese rivals. Why it won't disclose overall sales numbers for 2009, it has said that it experienced a 5.49 percent sales increase in December when compared to the same year in 2008. Sure, that probably only adds up to 600 bikes across the entire country, but growth in a down market is a positive sign.

Triumph's success can be pegged to one thing: good products. Bikes like the Daytona resemble market archetypes closely enough that they're easily cross shopped with more established competitors, at which point they're revealed to offer something genuinely different over the can't-tell-them-apart Japanese bikes. The company is also able to cash in on its heritage with the Bonneville range while offering bikes that are genuinely contemporary in their performance, build quality and price. The company even sells the only cruiser I've ever genuinely enjoyed riding, the utterly epic Triumph Rocket III.

All this has us salivating at the prospect of all-new products. Seven new products in four new ranges? What could they be? Dirt bikes? Scooters? Dirt scooters?!

Well things are looking up for Triumph while Yamaha and Honda are cutting production.

Although I will not be able to buy any of the new models, it will be interesting to see what they are? I'm hoping for a big Daytona and a Hypermotard style bike at least.

a 675 tiger "cub" will probably is at least one of those. one would hope they would resurrect the "hurricane(?)" hypertourer that they tested then scrapped

If they can get a 675 tuger cub cheap enough to compete with the versys or DL650 that would be good.

I'd like to see a balls out Daytona 1050, I don't know if they could get the triple engine to complete with the power figures of the jap il4 thousands

Going on the Daytona 675, it would probably need a 150cc margin over the IL4 1l bikes to realistically match the power, so the 1050 wouldn't be upto it as a triple.

Never mind the japs though - a new Daytona 1000+ would have the new BMW to compete with, along with the RSV4, RC8, 1198 etc. They'd also probably have to do some serious development into traction control and ABS to compete over the coming years .

There's probably a market for a big Triumph sportsbike, but only if there's a big price incentive over the competition - I doubt they could compete with the best stuff.

I think if they did realease something it would be cheaper than the other euro offers but dearer than the jap stuff.

They seem to have plenty of "cruiser" bikes, America, Speedster, Thunderbird and the Rocket III.
What I'd like to see (and I mentioned it in the Scottish forum) is a nice big muscle bike. Along the lines of a Thunderbird 1600/1700cc in a beefed up Bonnie frame Drooling. That would be a fairly competent alternative to the Honda CB1300, Suzuki GSX1400 and Yamaha XJR.

I doubt there will be much price difference between the Jap and Euro stuff in a years time. The R1 now retails at £12.5k - the same as an RSV4, RC8 or S1000RR. A standard 1198 is around £13k. The rest are (apparently) due to follow suit with price hikes.

If Triumph can re-enter the market at <£10k with a competitive bike I reckon they could do very well.

hmmm, chop a cylinder off the 675 and make a cheap 450 twin for training schools and beginners, with a 33hp kit option, variable seat height for those with short legs, an entry level bike to get folks interested in triumph's from the start of their biking career, I can also see a 675 tiger, and perhaps a rocket with touring fairing and panniers

The Daytona 675 doesn't match the straight four 600s in power but compensates with the increased torque and its handling. If Triumph were to make a large displacement sports bike, it would not be a straight four, it would more than likely be a straight three and Triumph would make it up to the job as they did with the 675. Triumph already learnt they could not compete with the straight four 600s with their Daytona 600/650 despite it being one of the best handling 600s made at the time. The success of the Daytona 675 partly lies with its design - the fact that it uses a triple engine made it attractive and different than the run of the mill straight four 600s and that it is not a direct competitor like the Daytona 600 was.

I would also bet that Triumph will make a Tiger Cub.

I think actually it does compete on power, but it needs the extra capacity to do it. This is Triumph's trump card really.

At the end of the day its a powerful quick sexy looking bike. Triumph got it right. If they could do that with a 1100cc triple or something that would be cool, but I don't think they can.

Indeed. According to the current FB mag:

Daytona 675: 110bhp, 65Nm, 162kg
ZX-6R: 111bhp, 60Nm, 157kg
CBR600RR: 104bhp, 59Nm, 155kg
YZF-R6: 109bhp, 60Nm, 166kg
GSX-R600: 106bhp, 61Nm, 163kg

Power and torque measured as stock, at rear wheel. Weight dry.

Very impressive from the Daytona 675 really considering the 950cc 595/955i triple made pretty much the same bhp (at the wheel) back in 1997-2000.

I would definitely like to see a light weight tiger cub - and don't see any reason they couldn't, but sadly I suspect we will see a DL650 style bike.
The engine you'd hope weighs less than a BMW F800 - so if they can keep the rest of the weight down, a chunk lower weight than the F800GS should be easily doable and would make a definitely interesting bike.

I'd say rereleasing the Sprint RS alongside the inevitable ST remake would be a better move. Pitch the new ST against the recent crop of bigger sports tourers like the new VFR1200 whilst the RS goes for the void left by the old ST and the likes of the old VFR800.

Dare I say it, I suspect a more fashionable front end for the current Sprint ST would have sold a few more units too. Time for an ST SE maybe? Wink
