Ok, I posted my 125 on Gumtree, and had a few emails, but here's an interesting one.

Yes it's still available, price is £500 as seen. Already had an offer from Limavady for full price, but he wants it delivered there, so if anyone can make me a good offer locally it would be better.

Thanks for your interest, Gary

Then I got this lol.

Thanks for the prompt response.. I am ready to buying it now for birthday gift for brother in-law and i am at sea at the moment as i am a marine engineer and due to the nature of my work, phone calls making and visiting of website are restricted but i squeezed out time to check this advert and send you an email regarding it. I really want this item to be a surprise for brother in-law so i wont let him know anything about the item until it gets delivered to him, i am sure he will be more than happy with this item. I insisted on paypal because i don't have access to my bank account online as i don't have internet banking, but i can pay from my paypal account, as i have my bank a/c attached to it, i will need you to give me your paypal email address and your paypal full name and the price so i can make the payments asap for the item and pls if you don't have paypal account yet, it is very easy to set up, go to www.paypal.co.uk Web site registration will take only 5 minutes just get back to me as soon as you get back to me registered and get it set up, after you have set it up i will only need the e-mail address you use for registration with paypal so as to put the money through. I have a pick up agent that will come and pick the item up after i have made the payments...

--------------------------------------------------

So BCF, how should I proceed with this? What scam could he be pulling? PayPal (I thought) is safe enough, and what can he possibly do with my paypal account email address?

If he was to bill me, I can just deny I bought anything yes?

Should I give him a fake email address and see what happens from there?

It's a scam. Just delete it, or if you're bored enough reply telling him to get his agent to open a Paypal account and send the money to the agent so he can bring you cash. Personally I would delete it and forget about it.

The scam is he's most likely hacked somebody's Paypal account, and by the time you get the money taken back from you by Paypal he'll have had the bike picked up and vanished.

Thats gumtree for you, if you sell anything over £200 on it you get what seems to be like an automatic email from some scammer claiming the item for sale is always for a relative and you are doing them a special favour. Same happened when I was selling a laptop except my scammer tried harder he had fallen out with his son in Nigeria and wanted me to send him the lap top to cheer him up as a present fro him. How nice. I even kept him going for a while. Its not just you its anyone from NI that sells on gumtree. It happened more than once with me I never answered the last ones when selling a trike though.
