Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone can give me some extra information on bringing UK bikes to France?
I'm Australian (with dual nationality with the Netherlands and an EU passport) and living in the south of France. I'm looking at buying a bike as when I left Australia I sold my last one, but the cost of motorbikes here in France is ridiculous! I've done a bit of window shopping online to see the prices in the UK and the bike I'm looking at ( a CBR 600RR 2009) will work out to be about 5000 Euros cheaper (after the GBP - Euro conversion) in the UK than buying here in France.

I was just wondering if anyone can tell me what processes I will have to go through to finally get it, and bring it back to France and eventually register it as a French bike and change the UK licence plates to French ones.

Do I have to get the headlights changed to come back to Europe?

What will be the process of registering it if I am just flying to the UK to buy it and then ride it back to France?

What insurance will I need? And can I get French insurance before I go to the UK that way it is covered immediately when I cross to France?

I read somewhere that I will need my 'carte de sejour' (which I am still patiently waiting for, 5 months later) to eventually register it here in France.

I also read that I might have to sign a declaration to say that its my bike and I'm not importing it to sell it, and then I also read that I might need to own the bike for 6 months before being able to bring it to France (which is not really possible for me because I'll be going to the UK for the weekend to pick it up and bring it back to France.

Does anyone know how difficult it is to change the MPH Speedo to Kilometeres? Its a digital speedometer so surely it is pretty simple?

Can anyone also tell me about the 'control technique' in France with motorbikes? What do they look for and what do the want to see? I'm guessing they just basically want to see a standard bike?
If its a relatively new bike (2009) will they be nice to me and leave me alone?

So many questions...

We have a dutch bloke at work, who brought his ZX10R over, he needed a new headlight unit at about £300.

He had no issue with the MPH km/h. on my ER6, its simply pressing a couple of buttons when you turn the bike on to swap between the 2. (Think about it, this saves so much hassle for an exporter).

I can't help about whats needed in france, I would suggest posting on a french website.

I've heard of lots of foreign buyers coming to the UK, because of the devaluation of the £, it makes sense. Not ten years ago I used to go to France to buy alcohol, I wouldn't dream of it now.

If you have a euro licence you can use it as a uk regd bike for up to 6 months before legally requiring to register it in France.

Buy it today, get on the ferry back to france with it. Only problem with that is you need a uk address to have the log book / V5 sent to. You also need UK address to have the export documents sent to for re-registering it in France.

See the DVLA site and also Angloinfo has interesting bits and pieces on the subject

£300 for the headlight unit isn't cheap, but its not bad though, thanks for the info.
It's not bad considering I'll be saving 5000 Euros anyway, I've heard the French border patrol in Cassis give out fines for people without anything done about the headlights,

Thats pretty funny about coming to France to buy booze because it was cheaper! I lived in London for a year before moving here to France, and I would have to say that regardless of the pound vs. euro, the cost of living is definitely more expensive in France these days, especially alcohol here now too, not cheap at all...

I'm still waiting on my French license to arrive, I had two Aussie licenses when I came overseas (from 2 different states in Aus) So I was able to renew one while being overseas before it expired, and the other one that was about to expire I managed to change for a French one (which never expires)
...but as the French administration system is so amazing, I'm still waiting on the French license and my 'carte de sejour.' Which from what I understand I cant really do anything without the two documents. I do have a international driving permit also which I am using in the mean time while I wait for the French one, but I've heard in some cases it can take a year to receive the French license!

I have some friends in London still, so I can use their address to get the documents sent to. So that wont be a problem.

What are the French border patrol guys in Cassis like? Are they really strict on checking all paperwork and everything? What should I tell them? That I'm from the UK and just going for a ride? Or that I'm living in France and exporting the bike from the UK? I guess the less they know the better really huh?

I had a look at the DVLA site last night, there's a lot of information on their site, I read something about getting a registration certificate by filling out a V62 form, and I also read about filling in a V756 form for 'Application for Certificate of permanent export' but in that V756 form it says
"The DVLA Local Office can issue the Certificate over the
counter, provided that you are the registered keeper and that
all checks are satisfactory. However it will not be issued more
than 2 weeks in advance of the intended date of export
."

So it seems like the best option would be to keep it registered in the UK for 6 months like you said, and then ask for the certificate of export after 5 months or so.

Do I have to register the bike in person? because I was planning on coming to the UK over a weekend and the DVLA will be closed (I'm assuming?)
Or is there a possibility of asking the previous owner to register it for 6 months and then I just have to change my name on the ownership papers and then its registered in my name that way?

I will have a look at the angloinfo website too, thanks for the tip

I went to the Honda shop here in France today to talk to them about my idea of bringing a UK CBR 600RR 2009 back to France and to ask about the headlights change etc.

And the guy at the shop said to me that the headlights wont be so much of a problem, the problem will be that the French law states that all motorbikes must not exceed 100 Horsepower, and he claimed that the 2009 CBR 600RR was approximately 126 HP (but after doing some research at home on the net I think its around 118 HP) anyway, and he said that the whole procedure to restrict the HP to 100 would cost upwards from 2000 Euros!

Does anyone know what the actual procedure to restrict horsepower is? How the hell can it cost that much? From what I can see from looking on the net is that is is mainly the ECU CDI unit, and it seems that it has something to do with the keys and ignition system?

I've seen the ECU CDI kit on ebay for around about 350-500 pounds, but it seems that the are selling the un-registered HP ones instead of the HP registered ones. Makes sense really, there probably wouldn't be so many people looking for a HP registered ECU for a bike (apart from me)

Is it possible to change this unit for a restricted one just for long enough the get it past the necessary French tests and then change it back so it is at its full power?
