Hi all,

I am seriously considering somewhat of an impulse buy and thought it might be wise to ask a couple of questions on here first.

I have the opportunity to buy a 2006 Suzuki Marauder GZ125 from my grandfather.

This motorcycle is in absolutely mint condition with only 599 miles on the clock. My grandfather bought it to tow with his motorhome and use it to nip to the shops whilst his motorhome was all set up at campsites.

I am pretty sure that he didn't even do all of the miles himself, as I am sure he asked the garage who he purchased it from if they would run it in for him, or something along those lines.

Apart from the odd occasions he has took the motorcycle on holiday with him, it has been in his garage covered with sheets and only started and let to run for a while intermittently. It is in absolutely showroom condition.

I found out yesterday that he plans to trade it in for another brand new Marauder (goodness knows why, he clearly has more money than sense!).

Anyways, as it is approaching summer and the fact I have some spare cash right now, I really fancy buying it, solely for some pleasure riding in the nice weather.

I passed what was known as the motorcycle Part 2 is 1993, but havent had a motorcycle since I started driving cars in 1994.

Being in my mid 30's with more than a couple of kids, I no longer have the need for speed that I once had and to be honest the mrs wouldn't allow me to have anything that looked more than docile at best. Also I am now built for comfort more than speed, so I thought a cruiser would be a good option.

My first question is one of value, my grandfather wants £1500 for this motorcycle, telling me they will give him this much in part ex on another bike, however I was planning on offering him around £1200, as after a couple of calls, this is a more realistic trade in price (and that was based on it having to be absolutely mint, which it is).

Would you consider this a fair price? Like I said, this is really an impulse buy as yesterday I wasn't even thinking of motorcycles, so although I would like it, I don't want to pay over the odds. That being said, not only is this bike in great condition, I also know its history (or lack thereof), I know it has been taken care of and certainly not raked about, which I wouldn't if I bought elsewhere, this obviously appeals to me.

Secondly, I have developed a rather large middle aged spread and now weigh 20 stone plus, will I simply be too heavy for a Marauder (or any other 125 for that matter)?

Thirdly, I have read that although these are nice looking motorcycles, the large amount of chrome is prone to rusting easily. Unfortunately I don't have access to a garage like my grandfather, so the motorcycle would be kept in my rear yard, covered with a suitable motorcycle cover. Would such a cover keep the rust at bay? Especially as the motorcycle would only be used for pleasure rides in the summer and would likely be left stood up (under the cover) for at least 6 months of the year.

Fourthly, I have entered my details on some of the insurance compare sites and have had a quote of £109 (Devitts) fully comp, with £200 compulsary access, bike kept on the road, no security, alarms or markings, up to 6000 miles a year and 0 years NCB, I thought this was incredibly cheap, is there likely to be a catch?

Lastily is there anything else I should be aware of in regards to the Marauder? I know a lot of people favour different styles, makes, etc, but it there anything I am glaringly missing (I am always cautious now after being an owner of a 1.8 petrol Freelander).

Thanks very much in advance for any help or advice you can give me.

I suspect it will be bollock-acheingly slow with your not-inconsiderable mass aboard. They're not quick bikes at the best of times.

BUT... the insurance is cheap, the bike's in good nick... why not just give it a go and if you get fed up of being overtaken by old gals in electric wheelchairs, you could always sell it on.
