PostPosted: 20:51 - 08 Mar 2010    Post subject: Derbi GPR 50 - starter motor Reply with quote

Just turned on my bike and attempted to start the bike. when i tried firing it up via electric start the starter motor started making a noise and the bendrix was spinning but it didnt sound too healthy. Gave it another go and it span much much weaker the next time and now when I attempt to do it the starter solenoid starts clicking now, any clues?
Please don't tell me the starter motor is gone I just replaced the bastard!

bump start it, sounds like a flat battery.
GPR50 have a habit of killing starters.

*looks over at bike balanced on a box with only one wheel attached and no brakes etc*
Maybe i'll look into this more when my bike is more like a rolling chasis....back to my other thread about my calliper I suppose :L

*shivers*
I've got a 2000 model at the moment was dirt cheap and had bad paint job...resprayed it all now though.
Wouldn't happen to know any cheap replacement starters incase it does konk out in future so i don't have to pay 200 pounds for a new one or spend about 70 pounds again on a second hand one?

I got my replacement one off ebay for 70 quid but still seems pretty pricey to me.

Anyway back to the starter motor now.... When using my battery on the bike the cog in the starter motor barely moves so to solve this problem I used a battery from a pan and hey problem solved it span freely Very Happy
Thing is now is that the small cog is actually on the cog on the flywheel, is that right or would it need to be pushed it with a screwdriver or something?

Shoved battery on a trickle charger so hopefully it should be better in a few days otherwise I'll have to replace the battery I suppose.

CHR15 cheers for your help but how would I check if the earth was good there is only one wire that goes to the starter and on the other one nothing is connected, would I just have to make sure its not rusty or something?

Cleaning it up now and will let you know if there's any improvement, Cog was jammed in flywheel so had to take starter off to get it back to normal and re attached and gave it a kick from the pan battery and it did the same thing again Neutral ahhh
Hopefully sorting out this connector might make a bit of difference

Took the starter motor off once again and cleaned up the actually connector on the starter motor a tiny bit since it looked a tiny bit rusty and all is fine once again however its not starting yet, its at that point where its just about to kick in and can't.
Taking into account the chain and back wheel isnt on properly I don't think these items will affect it however it had been sat for about 2 years perhaps cleaning out the carb might do it?
