My sister just turned 21 a few weeks ago and has had a YZFR125 for the past 4 months or so.

Now she's old enough to do her DAS, which I think she's doing one of them intensive 2 days courses this month. She's looking for a sports bike to buy.

Her problem is she's quite short, she had a lowering kit fitted to her bike and she can touch the ground with her toes on the bike but not flat footed. She's still getting used to riding bikes to be fair and she's falled off the 125 twice whilst trying to turn around and not being able to touch the floor properly. Her riding is alright, just a bit shakey on low speed control.

My concearn is, she's been looking at a CBR600RR and seems quite set on it or an R6. Anybody fitted lowering kit to one of these before? What kind of adjustment can you get out of them?

I've also told her I think it would be a good idea to fit a restriction kit to either of these bikes, even if she has a full lisence just while she gets used to the extra power. She's never had bikes or even ridden them until she got her 125 four months ago.

Can anyone even suggest some better bikes to go for that are still sports bikes and a newer design say 03/04/05 models? She doesn't like the older design sports bikes which is why she's looking at them two but she's deffo over looking her experience and looking more at the pose factor which is worrying.

I think we would probably need pics of your 21 year old sister before we could possibly comment.

Also, how short is she? That would help a lot. Thumbs Up

We need more statistics than that to judge what bike she wants, vital statistics, cup size?

Might just be spouting shit, but how confident about the weight of the bike is she? The reason I ask is she might not be leaning it over much when stopped so she cant be flat footed.

When I first sat on my R6 I was on tippy toes, but wasnt holding the weight of the bike much.

How tall is she? How about an SV650?

CBR600RRs are fairly small. I've had a girl about 5"4 sit on mine and it was ok-ish.

It's probably too small for me but I'm 6"2. Laughing

I think you mean 'Sports bikes suitable for short people'. Not all women are tiny little things reduced to tears by the prospect of anything with a seat height over 26 inches. Razz

With that out of the way, has she gone and sat on stuff? A decently big dealership, with a selection of used stuff would be a good idea. Seat heights count for shit, cos the width and the position all make a difference. She should spend a day actually sitting on stuff.

Sportsbikes are usually thin and easy to get your feet on the deck. I find the GSXR1000 a much better shortarse bike than an SV650, and every bugger claims those are 'well low, innit'. Daytona 675 seat is fine, but the 'back seat' is quite a stretch to swing your leg over if you're a bit stumpy like me. All this stuff, you never learn without trying it yourself.

Also do a search on here, I wrote a review of Daytona Ladystar boots ages ago, they make you about an inch taller. Could be worth it if she's not confident tippytoeing.

Leg length would be more useful. I know plenty people shorter than me who've got longer legs.

CBR400RR is probably the lowest non cruiser bike around...

Seconded. Another term you could use is the vertically challenged!!
It might be worth mentioning inside leg measurements as some people have short legs and long bodies. Idea

women usually have the advantage of usually being quite leggy, i know girls who are shorter than me with longer legs, so find out her inside leg length for a start

im 5ft 6 with a 29" inside leg measurement, I know... anyway, iv had a cbr600f sport (01), zx6r (03) and now a zx7r. All the bikes so far have been tip toe jobs, the zx7r being the best as the seat is low, but the fairings are fairly wide around the seat, but i can get a foot flat down by simply moving over slightly, none of these bikes have posed a problem to me. Only slight difficult moments can be when you need to turn the bike around in a small area, as pushing backwards up a hill for example with one foot is a little tricky

i wouldnt suggest a zx7r to her though, as they weigh 203kg dry...not saying girls are weak, well actually yes i am, small girls are generally quite weak in comparison to men.

If she can splash a little extra cash, the K6/K7 gsxrs are nice and low, i can get the balls of my feet down, and they are superb bikes, i test rode one last summer, i want one when i finish uni and i have money again.

The later R6's atm are very tall, i cant get even tip toes of each foot down at the same time on the current one Sad

Also agreed.

My friend is 5' 4" - she rides a Yamaha MT-03 (660) with the seat lowered. Lovely bike, I'm actually quite jealous Laughing

That's why I bought the munster boots. I can ride the Sprint fine, get my feet down when it stops and all that, but it's the paddling around parking where you need that extra bit of 'push'. I'm the bugger you'll see doing a 29 point turn rather than park anywhere that involves backing up the merest slope. 210kg dry, trivia fans. Laughing

(And no, I can't get it onto the centrestand by myself. That calls for girly eyelash fluttering. Or a car jack.)

Sounds to me mate like she'd be best off getting some experience and confidence on her 125 before making a step up to a 600. For someone with 4 months experience to jump onto a bike with probably 80-90bhp more is gonna be a huge step.

That might be a bit heavy for the weekly push to a layby

Very true, they must be the lowest big bike around. I wouldn't really recommend one to someone who has only ridden for 4 months though Shocked

Why not? Throttle goes two ways you know. And rider IS in control.

Yes it does, but going from a 12hp 125 to a 170hp hyperbike is just plain asking for trouble.

Note, I am not saying that cause she is a woman, but beacuse she is an inexperienced rider.

The throttle going both ways kinda defeats the purpose of getting a hayabusa.

You don't buy a bike with 190bhp to ride slowly.

Maybe you could shed some light on why a 'Busa owner would keep begging me for a go on the sv650?? Cool
