Basterds.

Although I'll never be using this tunnel I will certainly contribute to opposing charges to motorcyclists purely to stop the trend moving into other parts of the road network or congestion zone.

TBH I've never understood the draw of London.

You can never really afford to buy a home. Many people pay over 60-70% of their take home pay on rent.

It seems to me to be a better deal in the regions. Sure you might not make as much money but cost living sure as hell will be lower.

I don't live in London but I make a pretty good living from working there. Good wages with no rent or property prices penalty.

This - hence the bike and the associated 40 mile [each way] commute...

Sure but what about the loads of other people who don't make a good living? It's kind of like HK. People think oh so nice wealthy great place to be white conveniently ignoring the massive slums just behind the shiny skyscrapers.

Their problem. Loads of people means loads of amenities, services and infrastructure. That means loads of work for me and many others.

Preach it.

Presumably the congestion charge has increased the number of bikes and scooters to the point where the bean counters just cant resist raking in dollah.

Never mind, I'm sure MAG and the BMF will be all over it. Whistle

Replied to the consultation, although if it's anything like the charging old motorcycles consultation it's more than likely the response from TfL will be Middle Finger

Another day, another reason to rip the rear plate off the BMW...

A few hundred bikers turn up at the pay booths. do the usual gloves off, helmet off and then faff around in your pocket for the correct change. Then helmet on and gloves on. The same shit you need to go through at some fuel stations.
We would grind that crossing to a halt with massive tailbacks, motorcycle charging would be dropped Laughing

Doubt it, it will likely be cashless, pay by phone within 24 hours or something.
To be fair I don't see why bikes shouldn't pay something when there are loads of them like in London - but not the same as a car they are proposing (£1)

*Nods*

Quote:
The charge would apply from 6am until 10pm every day, including Bank Holidays. The charge would apply each time a motorist used the tunnels. We would collect the charge automatically, using systems similar to those we use to collect the Congestion Charge: there would be no toll booths at the Blackwall or Silvertown Tunnels.

TBH I'm amazed the Dartford crossing is still free for bikes, now that the booths have been removed.

How long do you think it will remain thus once the principle is settled?

More like 18% (my share, alongside GF) of a salary I can't easily get outside London.

Since 18% is quite low, we're buying a house together, which will bump it up to 25% or so for my share of the mortgage. Could buy a much cheaper house, but it would be in Romford or somewhere like it.

But more than that, London is pretty much a different country to the rest of the UK. I spend 99% of my time inside the M25. The city, its density, energy, grime, crime, glamour, all of it put together - is something I love. While as an Irishman, I cannot really love the English countryside - it's too manicured, too Tory, too, well, English.

While... Confused

As many sexpats are finding out Asia isn't as accommodating of them any more.

Violence against foreigners is sky-rocketing and the racist jibes many of the white folk are met with beatings. The image of the white man being wealthy is also tarnished considerably by the large numbers of homeless Brits and yanks lurking around Hong Kong.

Funny enough the HK/Macau/SZ have started not resetting tourist visas each time you cross the border with the visa clocks running concurrently.

What a load of bollocks.

All those poor (black, brown, yellow, whateverrrrr colour, who cares) people have NOT flooded into London, hoping to seek their fortune!

I think you are talking through your arse, my dear.

People think they are going to come here and get rich (myself included) - some do, most don't, and many end up "trapped here" and living miserable lives of drudgery in a massive rut.

Once here, they put down roots which they cannot then pull up, and so live here unwillingly, unhappily, wishing they could be somewhere else, but they believe they cannot afford to up sticks and leave, because they are now surrounded by what they perceive to be small comforts that they can't/don't want to give up.

Otherwise the population of London would have decreased until it was only - oh, well (!!) ... only white rich people. I can assure you, it definitely is not full of white rich people, down here at ground level.

Hmmm, okay: whether you meant "white" or "while" ... it still doesn't take away from the fact that too many people of any variety still come to London to seek their fortune.

But not everyone gets to be Lord Mayor.

I just get sick of people slagging off everybody living in London, it's not the Babylonian cesspit that everybody thinks.

Anyway, back to the original post: The Silvertown Tunnel directly affects me, it is quite literally down the road. So it will be "easier" to get from my house to Kent? I cannot contain my excitement.

Wouldn't that be a first.
There's no-one quite like an expat Northerner to have a totally lucid idea of how London is.

To be honest, I am shocked it took them this long to start charging for bikes, all that money they are missing out on. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Yeah, I suppose the next step would be starting to charge us for parking like they do at Westminster.

Meanwhile Blackwall tunnel is the only reasonable way of crossing the river if you happen to be at Greenwich/Lewisham area, why don't they introduce the charging only for new Tunnel and not the existing one? In that way who want to have quick pass can choose to pay.

On the side note, worst case scenario we can took a lift at Greenwich tunnel and cross the river by foot lol

I travel to London 3-4 times a month and I don't care how much people are paid - it's not worth wastin 2-3 hours of your life each day commuting on overcrowded roads or public transport.

46 weeks/year X 10 hrs/week = 460 hours of your life which you can never get back each year. That's over 19 days Shocked
