I am getting a new bike next week and I am wondering which of the above to get fitted? Therefore I am asking you, good people of BCF, for your considered views

Thanks

My friend who recently had a nasty crash told me that the crash bungs on his bike (which was my old bike) had caused quite a lot of damage and practically ripped the fairing off on one side. But, they aren't there to protect the fairings in a big crash, they are to protect it if it falls over/low speed drop.

As for engine bars I don't know as I've never used them....

Engine bars, must be a reason for riding schools to use them rather than crash bungs. Ive only had a low speed off with engine bars on my bike but the damage to the bike itself was nothing where as with crash bungs im pretty sure I would have had a fair bit of damage to the bodywork too (along with probably having to replace the bungs).

It depends on the bike you're getting I think and what you're asking - aesthetic or protection?

Seems that bungs tend to go on faired bikes and ideal for low speed spills and drops rather than high speed crashes slides. Engine bars that I've seen (or noticed) have been on offroader/touring bikes or cruisers.

I had bungs put on the SV immediately in the event of a drop to protect the fairings. In the case of a high speed crash I personally think I'd not be worrying about the state of the bike too much in respect of bung damage caused but that depends on whether it was my fault or not I suppose! It really depends on the bike I suppose. On a faired bike it really has to be bungs. On a naked it can be bungs or bars.

My missus has bars on her bandit, she's low speed dropped it twice which caused no danage except to the paint on the bars which I have touched up, good as new Thumbs Up

My wife had these on her divvy before she had the bandit. I chucked it up the road playing silly buggers Embarassed Killed the crash bars but the engine survived.

There are stronger ones, renntec and the like but these did the job and were cheap.

Depends on the bike,

I have but R&G's on the TDM and Speed Four, I crashed the four the other day and the body work was completely untouched. I also crashed the TDM the other day Embarassed and again hardly any damage.

Engine Bars I have found are usually too big and drag along the ground when cornered fast.

R&G's all the way for me. Thumbs Up

My mate told me that someone he knew had a crash with crash bungs on at high speed and they ended up twisting the frame where the damage would otherwise have been to the engine casing, which compared to a frame is cheaper to fix.

Dont know how much truth is in that story mind.

I have the Renntec engine bars and the same bike as you. Be careful: these bars, although good quality, are quite wide and I have scraped them while (hard) cornering more than once - due to their position forward on the bike there is a danger of the front wheel being levered off the road with the inevitable consequences. Shocked Am actually considering removing them for this reason.

I suspect that if the crash was bad enough to twist the frame the bike wouldn't have survived whether it had bungs, crashbars or nothing
