PostPosted: 13:30 - 09 Mar 2010    Post subject: London bays and bike covers Reply with quote

Recently changed jobs which means now I have to park outside in the motorcycle bays rather than a private car park.

The other day someone decided to rip off my indicator, put some nice scratches in my fairing and also push the nose cone out of line...everyday it seems some ped rider decides to shuffle everyone elses bike into other peoples so they can squeeze in themselves.

Having only used the bay for a few weeks not I cant help but think the bike will only get worse...

I was thinking of getting a bike cover but was seeing if anyone has done this as i'm a bit concious that it will probably just get stolen so ultimately, will be a waste of money.

I hate to see the bike getting ruined so worse comes to worse, it maybe an idea just to chop it in and get a naked bike like a hornet instead.

Any one with some advice...other than not riding in?

thanks

I have seen bike covers about that allow you to thread the bike chain through it to secure it to the bike.

Don't think a bike cover would help. Sounds like the bike was knocked over to me.

I would buy a very cheap bike that you didn't mind getting smashed up for the sake of commuting, but that's just me.

Yep, I did think that initially, but the scratches are all the part of the nose cone which wouldn't really touch the floor if the bike fell. It looks more like someone has managed to get underneath the light and tried wriggling their bike in causing some damage in their feeble attempt.

I have contemplated this but don't really have the space to do this at the moment. It is a option....

For the time being I will try get hold of a cheap bike cover and just lock it so it doens't go missing...will check out the lidl one at the weekend but it doens't look like one of those which can be locked.

Fit a cyclone alarm to it. Don't need to wire in any of the immobiliser stuff, just the box, alarm and wires out to power and indicators.

Any one tries to move your bike it'll go off on the vibration sensor in the CPU box. If thats not enough to put folk off then I'm not sure what would be.

I have an alarmed disc lock. £30 (about £10 more than a cyclone alarm) but no wiring. Anyone bumps your bike and it goes off. With what your saying, I'd be tempted to take a day of work but go in anyway and park up, go and sit with a cup of coffee near by. Not sure if it's happening often, but if anyone tries to move/touch/harass your bike, get over there and rip them for a bit.

Thumbs Up

I have an alarm fitted which has a motion sensor type of thing. It's pretty sensitive - no doubt it goes off during the day but I don't think anyone around here bats an eye lid when it does.

Although tempting, just so I can catch them in the act, I doubt this would help as you just know it will happen again.

There are too many peds as it is usually them that are all scratched up and have owners who just don't care about theirs or other peoples bike.

Sadly, I think that is the reality of the situation - I doubt the bike will stay damage free for long - maybe it will be better just to get something cheap and cheerful for the commute in.

My commute in is from Becontree/Dagenham into St. Pauls...life was easier when I had access to the work car park...now it's reserved for the 'chauffeur' cars!!

If you can afford it, buy a cover that is somehow lockable, not only from theft but it might prevent it inflating in the wind.

When i started riding, the gaestapo were not allowed to lift the cover or touch it in any way.

A bit of hearsay i heard a few years back, was that they can now remove any obstruction of the plate/tax/VIN(can they go that far?). Which means removing a cover...

You might see me then, I come from Hornchurch heading to shoreditch. Big TDM with extra lights on the handguards.

Can't ask your manager to try to fight it? say that the bike doesn't take up much space and it is much safer in the work car park. Also mention the fact that you can get about 6 bikes in the space of one car.

Luckily at my place I can still you the car park.

I'm with Alexio on this.... buy a shitter.

I commute into Westminster on the choob, and I usually get off a couple of stops earlier than I need to just to get some daily walking in. Most of the bike bays I pass on these walks amaze me, and I'd be bloody reluctant to leave a bike I gave a damn about in one of them. It's not often I've seen anything that's not scuffed, dented, bits missing, etc.

Makes me appreciate the free parking we have at work, underground car park, covered with cctv and a whole section for bikes only. Theres also an outside area which is covered by cctv to. I've seen how the bike bays here in London get so full with the bikes all squashed together by people forcing their bikes in, its not good.

Interesting as I can remember reading somewhere that they were not allowed to remove covers on bikes. I guess if there is nothing suspicious they would just leave well alone anyway.

Still it is worth a try for now...will just have to get a cover thats earry to lug around too...buggers are a nightmare to pack most of the time!

I think I may have noticed you before then. The lights on the handguards rings a bell for some reason...

Would love to get the manager to ask but I don't company policy allows it. Apparently, only MD's can get access to the office car park and they pay for that privalege...

I think I took for granted the use of a private carpark at my old job...

The normal bikes, by that I mean everyday bikes who use their side stand, are usually fine. They park sensibly, not tight up against one another and are not moved around seeing as being on steering lock doesn't really make it that easy Laughing

Its the Ped that get shuffled around all the time, pushed against each other, scratched and scuffed like Astra_G mentioned.

Think a cover and trying to find proper bikes to park in between is the best short term solution...other than than, a sub £500 hack may be best in the long run...

Or do you think I can bribe the security guard to let me in Smile

If you don't mind a short walk, why not park in the free Corporation car parks? There's one running underneath London Wall between Moorgate and Aldersgate, and another one in Baynard House, which is to the east of Blackfriars Bridge. I used to work in Paternoster Square, just off St Paul's, and it took me about five minutes to walk from the Baynard House one. Loads of space, lit and fairly warm, cctv & guards. Oh, and did I mention it is free?

I'm with Paivi on this one, maybe it's best to look around for a secure car-park a little further out, and do the walk...or catch the tube/bus. It might be worth it for piece of mind, and keep your bike in good nick. Thumbs Up
