You should only consider a Rover when there are no other cars in the world.

The KV6 doesn't have the same level of head gasket problems as the normal K-series, although it still has some. One of my Dad's engineers owned a 2.5 petrol Rover 75 for about 150,000 miles, and it was a heap of shit. I don't think his head gasket ever went, but silly things failed. He wanted to get rid, but it was worthless so he held on to it.

The diesel is meant to be OK, mechanics magazine loves them.

A grand gets you an older 3-series, mondeo, or any other repmobile. Why would you buy a Rover when you could have anything else.

I own a rover 75 1.8 k series 2001 with 84000 miles.

I would recommend one, but also avoid another one..

Its comfy, it drives well, its got the right amount of buttons/gadgets and its quite a decent all round travelling thing.

Prone to anything going tits up in an engine..
Head gasket failure, inlet manifold gasket failure, thermostat failure, radiator cracking, pipes cracking, exhaust hanger snapping, drinks petrol like its going out of fashion, the 120mph warning light doesnt come on... maybe just mine? some have an issue with steering slighty to one side, as stated...dealer aftercare...is about as useful as having 2 left feet which are strapped to your arse.

If you think you have the cash to front up for those parts.. go for it.

If you want something with a bit more of a future... BMW 318 or Audi A4... those were my other options.

Wouldn't touch a Rover, ever.

Get a Honda Accord.

The Rover CDT and CDTi are very good cars, they use BMW's diesel engine (the same one used in the 3 series and some earlier jags and Land Rovers).

They'll still have the inherent built in faults of their petrol brothers with other things though.

Also the best site I find for cars is Honest John.

Also with Rover gone you may think parts are hard to come by, but Rimmer Brothers are the place to go for them.

So in summary 75 diesel good, 75 petrol bad. And on a 1999 I assume its a 1.8 Petrol.

according to first post its the V6 2.0l

I love my rover..its covered like 9000 miles since i got it in August, the inlet manifold gasket went and its eaten 4 tyres.

Aside from that its pretty good, head gasket has been upgraded, thermostat housing is now metal rather than cheap plastic.

I can see it lasting me til atleast April

Years ago I was driving down a country road behind a Rover 75 and it kept slowing down at every bend, I mean really slow.

I thought this guys a nugget, why is he driving so badly?

As I become more aware of Rover 75s I noticed they all slowed down, I put it down to "Rover drivers" as you would "Volvo drivers".

I then had the "privilege" of driving my boss' Rover 75 VP to Middle Wallop from Cheltenham, I soon found out why people drove them so slowly, they are scary as shit!

Wallowy doesn't adequately describe just how bad the suspension is and coupled with an appalling <30mpg I reckon it's a car no one would ever want to own.

So would I recommend buying an 11 year old, gas-guzzling, poor handling car, with no dealer back-up and spares network, for £900?

I wouldn't take it as a gift.

My 125k mile 325i cost £800 and parts are cheap and plentiful. Its more powerful, RWD and just generally betterer than a rover. Cam chain engine so no mileage worries on that front. Mine could do with new shocks but it wouldn't fail an MOT in the state its in right now.

However 'cheap' car prices seem to have leapt up in the last nine or so months, so I'm not sure if you could get one for under £1k these days. Still, as Robby says only buy a Rover if there are no other cars to buy.

Been there, never listened to others, wish i did.

I'll never own another one but i can see how people get tempted. Looks like a lot of car for little money. But they cut corners and penny pinched in important places when they made them.
