I don't like organised rideouts for a cause, I think soldiers are involved in the murder of people just trying to defend their country from invasion, but i still think that mirror guy is an idiot.

So what if people raise money by doing something they like ?

Sponsored walks etc, are enjoyable for people, its the element that involves personal exertion, is what he really thinks is the key thing, but going on a ride with no good roads, just for a cause, is a sacrifice, when you could be going somewhere fun instead.

Makes some reasonable points, but far from limited to bike events to my mind.
So many things are done 'for charity', when it basically seems like an excuse for a jolly.
Marathons are an example of this - ok they are more effort, but they certainly cost a lot and annoy other people etc.
Most of the ideas of 'support' seem to be pretty commercial orientated these days - buying football gear,

Then of course there's the whole case of whether 'supporting' is the right thing to do to people involved in killing and terrorising innocents of a different skin colour to us.

I'm not sure I'd blame newspapers - I'm not sure I see a solution for 'people' and 'life' in general.
