The next few years are going to be interesting, but also a little sad as more and more electronic aids are introduced to sports bikes.

I wonder if the BMW will manage to be as reliable as the Jap bikes - if not, it's not too hard to add that 20hp to a Jap bike (and frankly with road use probably wouldn't be a massive issue on reliability anyway.)

Difficult bit is to do that and keep it road legal.

my oh my dont the f4 sounds like a f1 car on the stright Exclamation Very Happy

im quite amazed at what bmw have achieved at there 1st stab at a proper sports bike, they could have had the ultimate package if they didn't let a toddler do the styling

i think they should have a go at a 600 next Thumbs Up

Doesn't mean that everyone who buys one will be a riding god, I very much doubt that many people who buy one will be any quicker than they would on a jap IL4.

Only the other day I noticed how happy I was that the Gixxer didn't shut off the throttle when I was 46 degrees lean angle like the BMW would in Sport mode, must of saved me at least .8 of a second on my way home.

Razz

Or am I just saying that because I want one and I own a jap IL4?

Actually with the traction control and ABS (though I'm not sure if we've seen this with the Hondas?) I can see some people going a bit faster.

More power means gears can be held for longer, so while all-out power may not make people faster, the longer gears/more low down power may do so.

And would it be similarly easy to add another 20bhp to the BMW?

Isn't the BMW a lot more expensive though? Hardly beating the japs if they're not producing a similarly priced motorcycle that is similarly competent and similarly reliable.

I don't think it is much more expensive than a new R1, which is an eye watering £12k.

Think the beemer is £12.k with no hope of a discount.

As above – the new R1 is pretty expensive too. Also, you can buy the BMW without the extras. And while the suspension may not be significantly better, in this case you do get what you pay for, while in many case you didn’t really with more expensive models (ie MVs).

Hi

Quick look on the BMW site and the basic S1000 is £11190, so substantially cheaper than the R1.

All the best

I will sheepishly eat my words then Laughing

I had no idea a new R1 was anything like that much, I've never considered a new bike so am not abreast of prices at all. I thought a new superbike was 8 or 9 grand, is that way off then or is the R1 just unusually expensive?

the prices of all the japs have gone up a fair bit

the bmw specs are on par with the duke S,
isn't it also cheaper then that and the mv?,

so id say its pretty good value.

im surprised the r1 came last with all the hype about its crank Rolling Eyes Sad

Combination of factors. The R1 is expensive and the prices of the Japanese bikes have rocketed.

All the best

Yamaha are taking the piss somewhat I think.

I was in a dealer last week where they had for sale a brand new GSXR 1000 at only £300 more than a brand new R6.

Think the Yam was £9,300.

I think Europe and Japan will be constantly leap frogging each other in the coming future.

I have no idea why you would buy most bikes new unless you had money to burn.

I'm looking into replacing the RSV soon and you can buy a 2008/9 Blade with 1000 miles on the clock for not much over 7k. Same goes for the ZX6, they are 8k new and can be had for 6k with less than 1000 miles on the clock.

Also the price of parts for the BMW will be silly (I think), so when it hits the secondhand market if you do have a knock it will cost ££££'s to repair.

Hi

Not sure on BMW parts prices. However Japanese parts prices are truely hideous.

All the best

Well compared to the cost of my Aprilia RSV the Jap prices are a bargain!

Saying that I only have experience with Suzuki and Kawasaki.

Whats the deal with test rides?

I've never booked one before.

I know i can do it on the BMW website, but will they ask me to proved I have the money already available in cash? Will they take a deposit from me just in case? Will they run a credit check?

Curious as i'm starting a new job soon and wnat to test ride a few bikes in the down time in preperation for my next purchase (which will be 2nd hand Smile )

They're not going to check whether you have the cash, but they would expect you to give the impression that your a serious and legitimate potential customer.

It depends on the dealer, but in terms of main dealers - usually they'll check your license and sometimes refuse unless you have a clean licence. Often they'll have a minimum age of 21 or even 25. You'll be covered for a test ride on their insurance, and there will be an excess which you'll have to cover should you cause any damage to the bike. The excess is usually £500-1000 and some dealerships will ask you sign a commitment to pay if you damage the bike; others will ask you to pay the excess before you take the bike, and refund it upon safe return.

Independent dealers often have more flexible arrangements, but it's still very much 'you damage it, you pay for it' one way or the other.

2 points:

In that video, when he says 'master bike' it sounds like masterbate.

And the handheld video footage ruins it.

Aprilia non engine spares used to be pretty cheap in the late 1980s, but they soon learnt the Japanese makers trick of having expensive spares. Most of the time European makers have had cheaper spares. Odd Ducati spares I have bought (Freccia uses a few Ducati bits) have been comparatively cheap. Honda spares used to be hideous, but Yamaha aren't that bad these days.

All the best
