New Rider seeking advice

Hi there guys,

I'm new here, so sorry if I posted in the wrong place!

So, i'm a 16 year old lad from London/UK and I am thinking of taking a CBT Test so I am legal to drive a Moped on the road.

So i'm going to ask a few questions below:

1. How much is a provisional license?

2. How long and how much is the CBT Test?

3. I'm not sure on what Moped to get, so any links are welcome but I only have a £500 budget

4. How much is the insurance for the Moped? aswell as Tax?

5. What helmet can I get as I have glasses, and can't wear contact lenses.

5. Do I need leathers? as I don't really want to wear them.

6. How much is the petrol usually for a 50CC Moped?

Thats all I can think of at the moment, I will add to this post if I think of anymore questions.

Do you want something with gears or a scooter? take a look on www.biketrader.co.uk there is plenty there for less than £500

4. How much is the insurance for the Moped? aswell as Tax?

I think insurance for me on my 50cc was about £300 for a year, tax was less than £20

5. What helmet can I get as I have glasses, and can't wear contact lenses.

Glasses should fit under most helmets without an issue.

5. Do I need leathers? as I don't really want to wear them.

Legally speaking no only a hemet, it's your skin though. I would wear Gloves and a jacket bare minimum.

6. How much is the petrol usually for a 50CC Moped?

The same as petrol for a 2 litre car or a military tank Laughing

petrol is petrol, it't about £1.10 per litre at the moment. You will get pretty good MPG on a 50cc, you will need extra for 2 stroke oil as well if you get a 2 stroke bike.

1. was £30ish when i got mine in 2002 lol, prob gone up

2. mine was £120 on a geared 125, might be cheaper on a 50. lasts usually one day, its all about getting up to a standard they are happy with to let you loose on the road

3. get a 50cc geared bike, then when you are 17 you can jump on a 125 no worrys. no idea on suggestions, im sure others can help

4. Insurance will vary from person to person, nobody will get the same quote, go to thebikeinsurer.co.uk and try some quotes on some bikes you like. Things that affect quotes are: age, location, where its going to be stored, if you are comuting, driving history, your occupation, miles you intend to do etc etc. tax, same as a 125? so £15 a year?

5. Kit is up to you, on my bike i wear leathers, but you can find decent textile gear as well if you so wish

6. petrol is priced at the garage....atm around £1.15 a litre in the southwest, so just over a fiver a gallon, and im going to guess they do around 100mpg?

so £5 for roughly 100miles seems reasonable

3. I'm not sure on what Moped to get, so any links are welcome but I only have a £500 budget: You will easily find a moped for as little as £500, I even know someone who makes them roadworthy and sells them.
4. How much is the insurance for the Moped? depends on who you get quotes with, they vary vastly...go for TPO and it shouldn't be too huge.
aswell as Tax? no more than £30 a year
5. What helmet can I get as I have glasses, and can't wear contact lenses: any, you must try all helmets on before making a choice..try with your glasses
5. Do I need leathers? as I don't really want to wear them: no you can wear what you like, though I'd recommend proper gloves and sturdy boots.
6. How much is the petrol usually for a 50CC Moped? No more than £8, and should last you for ages

I got a Gilera DNA 54 Plate for 700 2 years ago. Would thoroughly recommend them. They look like a bike but have a moped engine so its only the noise that gives it away. The main thing I liked about it was it had the same size tyres as 125's.

All I can offer other than that is that Clanger, I've never seen a CBT for over £110 let alone £150! I suppose it depends on your area.

And secondly, for moped insurance I found https://www.lexhaminsurance.co.uk the cheapest company by miles as they specialize in CBT riders.

My mum has said she will buy me a brand spanking new Moped for £1000 - £1200 so if anyone has any reconmendations for me they will be truly appreciated.

Also, would someone reccomend me with some

Gloves

Helmet

5. What helmet can I get as I have glasses, and can't wear contact lenses. - Most will suit well, helmet on first then pop the glasses on through the visor area.

5. Do I need leathers? as I don't really want to wear them. - Bare min i'd suggest is a good textile jacket, helmet, gloves and a pair of jeans.. but the better the protection the less blood and pain

6. How much is the petrol usually for a 50CC Moped? - up to about £10.

So i get my Provisional (need to order it), Book a CBT, once I pass I can then start riding on the road once I have all my protective gear?

I quite like this moped, what are your thoughts?

The CBT is usually just one day, it is compulsory BASIC training to try and keep you safe while you learn how to pass your test (at least that is the theory)

Before you ask. There will be a document check, an eyesight test (reading a numberplate about about the length of a cricket pitch), some basics on the highway code, basic bike handling through cones, geting it up to speed in a small space and stopping it again.

Then in the afternoon there will be the on the road section, usually two riders to an instructor with the learners being able to hear the instructor over the radio. Halfway round there will be a practical on roundabout and junction etiquette with the Controlled Stop thrown in.

CBT can be done on a geared bike or on an automatic - it makes no difference to the qualification, personally I would recomend doing it on a geared bike.

Legally you only need a fitting helmet that confirms to UK standards, licence and a current CBT to ride a moped on the road. However I would suggest you'd be a damn fool to ride without gear. There are photos floating about on here from 30mph and 60mph touchdowns I've made.

I have some draggin jeans combats which I love, I wear a pair of leather bike boots under them, a leather jacket, and a pair of leather summer gloves. I can wander round like that when off the bike and no one really notices.

Hi again guys,

I'm about to book my CBT, but i need a few questions answered before i do it

I have not drove a bike before, therefore I have no expierence..I don't need a trainer before i can take my CBT do i?

As i said, i have no experience in bikes, so all i want to do is book my CBT pass it and then ride on the road?

Is this the way they do it?

For £1000-1200 you could get a very nice geared 50 indeed. You would have to buy second hand but you could probably get an 05 plate motorbike rather than a new scooter. Why you ask? Because scooters are for gays and Italians.
