PostPosted: 21:34 - 16 Mar 2010    Post subject: '99-'02 Yamaha R6's? Reply with quote

I'm in the process of downgrading cars for the time being and see the best way to spend that spare bit of dosh is on another bike!!

I currently have a VFR400 NC30 as my weekend toy but want something a bit more useable and quicker. I love riding my VFR, and thats why I couldn't justify selling it, but I dont want to put on the miles and run it to the ground.

At the moment, Im looking at spending around £2500-£3000 which gives the 99-02 Yamaha R6. Slightly dated front end but still has the agile track looks. Are all 99-02 R6's carbed, and is this a problem?

Other alternatives to the bike? Could afford the GSXR600/750 however it'd be around 2002-2003 where they were pretty obese!

ZX6R 636 B1H? Meant to be really good also... Could be a possibility over the R6?

Just basically looking for advice on what to look for?

Ta

if your willing to spend £3k get the 02 model r6 with the led rear lights.they have a few better bits than the slightly older model and keep there money well.i keep thinking about selling mine but not sure yet. yes there all carbed and love mine to bits but it gets a bit snatchy at times so a steering damper is a must..

Yamaha's r6 gained fuel injection on the 03 onwards models.
so yep they are carb between 99-02
(01 gained quick release number plate hanger and LED tail lights.)
used price have gone up on them a fair bit, so bargains are harder to come across.

the bh1 is often hailed as the "1st hardcore race orientated 600 supersport" after the creation of the original r6.
sporting radial brakes, usd forks, and the 599rr model had A slipper clutch before the rest of the class and even the thous.
suspension, in particular the rear shock gets criticized for being a bit hard for the road, but members on here seem to get along fine with it.

the k1-k3 gsxr 600/750 might look obese, with its fat tubby round shape but its far from heavy,
weighing in competitively with the current 600 class.

there are all very good bikes,
the bh1 would be my choice, but thats just personal preference

what are you planing on using it for?

for 2500-3000 you could pretty easily get a 5SL R6 (2003) fuel injected one that has the decent gearbox.

you can pick up a 99-02 model one for about 1500

Gray,

Those pictures do it for me! Am I right in saying though, that the ones with the massive back lights can be converted to the twin LED units?

zx6r by far the better bike owned both r6 and zx6r and the 6r wins hands down handles better goes better aswell. only trouble is the b1h`s have the same issue that the r6`s have which is a gearbox made of cheese... what you pay for a r6 you can get a b1h for which alround is the better bike...unless your going to be picky and say ohh the r6 has won more races in bss or wss ...but thats a whole differant ball game road and track miles apart

Also worth noting is the odds of actually finding an old R6 that hasn't been ragged and thrashed within an inch of it's life. Plenty of people I know have had them and ironically the only one I know of that isn't knackered (yet Wink ) is Mattspratt's Laughing

I've always had a soft spot for the older R6s - especially the later models with the LED rear lights.

Whether I'd personally part with an NC30 for one is a different matter though. Thinking

i guess it ended pal, but i tell you for a fact it has not been common this year to see r6s at the prices you quoted

last year average bh1 :£2500 + this year £3000+

the price you have stated look similar to the tread in previous years but at the moment

99-02 r6's are going for £2000-£2700+
usually with +20,000 mileage and a "few stone chips here and there"
03 models are around £3500

i agree those prices are ludicrous but thats the used market at the moment

I'd say the gearbox in the B1h is far more reliable than that in the R6. I've not heard of one dropping second gear.

CCTs tick on B1hs, and the brake seize but it's not usually a big issue.

I think it's just because they're so known, rather than dated but only imho.

You know how many R6's are on Ebay?.... & I'd spend >£2K as soon as I had it purely because I love the styling of that model.

Yeah, prove it. (before you say look *over there* - you provided the statement so feel free to backup ya words)

the lights can be bought brand new for about £30, and the old undertray can be modded to fit the new panel.

my sisters got a b1h and i've had 2 r6's. b1h has more torque but the r6 feels faster because it has more of a top end kick. 2nd gear breaks on 02 r6's if you wheelie in 1st and try to change to second on the back wheel. easily solved if you just pop up wheelies in second or use the clutch to shift gears on the back wheel.
both bikes are very reliable. i would rather have an r6 over a b1h, I think they look better and they feel faster, if your not a hooligan dont buy a r6 though, you wont like the fact it has no mid range.

you can pick up damaged or ragged r6's for 1500. Good ones are about 2250 to 3000.
