De restriction

Hello again,
As some of you may remember in my last post, I said that I was going to wait a year for a car or a bike but now my birthday is in a week, its a totally different matter .

Basically, I now want to ride a scooter at 16 and i just have a few questions about de restriction because i am now getting one but will probably have it restricted at first but i doubt i will not give into temptation after a couple of months of riding in the gutter.

I was recently looking at insurance quotes and I put my age in stating that i was 16 into the go compare website and got some quotes for an aprilia sr50(about 2 years old). At first I said that it wasn't modified in anyway and on 3rd party fire and theft the best quote was around £280. However I then changed it to say that this bike is de restricted whilst still stating my age as 16. To my suprise, i got many quotes through with the cheapest of £370. But why! :0 Surely its illegal so why whould they insure me?. Also if i did get insured for a de restricted bike would it not be void and therefore i would be immune form "driving without valid insurance" and if found out, just get the conviction for driving otheriwse in accordance to liscence because after all i have stated in the insurance details that the bike is de restricted. If anyone can help me with this it would be much appreciated.

Restriction is a legal requirement at age 16. You could however derestrict it perfectly legally once you were 17 and its possible you might want to insure it before then ready so that you can ride it. thats why the insurance companies let you say say that. As far as their concerned, so long as they get their money they will insure you to ride anything.

Getting caught isn't just a matter of having insurance or not, it's what your license covers you to ride. So getting caught with a derestricted bike at 16 is exactly the same as being caught on a bike without a license.

If i were 16 though I'd defiantly derestrict my bike. Just be careful.
