I don't know if this can help any1 but...
I usually use a tom tom when riding around Essex simply because I like to loose myself into country roads for hours but then when I need to come back home I don't want to have to look at the map or whatever.
Now I've found a program called Tripmaster

which records everywhere you go. If you use it in conjunction with Tyre

and Google earth it's brilliant. They're all free.
you can see where you have been. it creates paths for you and you can plan the best routes around.
