Some of the supermarkets do reasonably priced policies - M&S and Sainsburys - I've used Sainsburys and they were very good. My guys are all with NFU now as I have multi insurance benefits.

I think the main thing to look for is continuity of care ie. if you start claiming for a condition during one year's insurance when it comes to renewal time they continue to insure you and not try and exclude this ongoing condition! It's got a special name but I don't have a brain today so can't remember what it's called, sorry!

Other than that look for amounts covered for each separate claim, amount covered for personal indemnity (if puppy bites someone, or causes an accident).

There is one company that is an absolute No No - leave it with me and I'll see if I can find out which one. Stinkwheel is a good person to help on this one as he deals with them from a different side and must see lots of different claims and companies - hopefully he'll be along to help!

My MIL works in a vet and told us we needed the ongoing care thingy as mentioned by Tonka.
Pet plan are meant to be very good (who we have our cat with) but Tesco are also good at paying out quickly and easily from the vets point of view.

waste of money imo.

put what you plan to pay for the premium in a pot/under the bed/in a bank account and just save for that jsut in case.

got 2 cats, had a dog previously and neither has required a vet yet.

My dog is with Pet Plan and is on the Covered for Life Pet Plan. It covers him for vet bils up to 12K a year. It's about £30 a month.
They have been fantastic so far with payouts and information.
We were unlucky that he got a wee urine infection when he was 5 months old so the tablets and visits to the vet we just claimed for. Only thing was the excess that was about £40 I think.

We had a big claim to make as it was discovered that he had Hip Dyslapsia and he had to get TPO surgery at a specialist in Fife. There were a few complications and he was in the vets up there for about 2-3 months. All in that surgery (which I never gave a second though to doing after the consultation) amounted to around £6000. Pet plan payed out straight away with no questions asked.

I think that although it shouldn't be, having insurance for a dog is a sign of the times. If your dog should even knock someone over and they hurt themselves they can and will sue you for negligence. This could cost you your home in an extreme case. If your dog escapes from your garden, back of the car or it's collar snaps etc. and it causes a traffic accident, you will be held responsible - you cannot just make a mistake Rolling Eyes It's not just for Vet bills these days.

I think this was made clear to me as a friend's Golden Retriever jumped up at someone and knocked them over. They broke their wrist badly and the friend was sued. They didn't have insurance and it was a complete nightmare for them. Folk are no longer content that 'accidents happen' - there are no accidents anymore, there is always someone at fault and therefore to blame.

Seriously, does one quick injection really cost all that much?

glad i don't have a dog then,

shame though that people think a dog needs insurance more so than cyclists and pedestrians
