Hi Guys

Had my bike stolen earlier in the year so have finally got the insurance money and looking at one of these.

anyone have any reviews or opinions of the 2001 cbr's? Is this a fairly decent bike for approx £3000?

They look amazing and just wondering if they ride as good as they look

Cheers

They're fantastic bikes.

Comfy, fast, handles well etc.

Check for any rattle from the cam chain tensioner when viewing.

If there is a rattle then is it a sign to walk away?

Prices seem on the up lately for some reason. Most of the RR ive seen have been £3500+ and I will have occasional pillion so need a little more comfort than the RR offers

No, it just needs replacing, so if it's trade get them to do it or if it's private ask them to knock £100 or so off to get it replaced.

A lot of Hondas suffer from the same problem, the stock CCTs are a bit naff I suppose.

So yeah, start it up, rev it to about 5k or so and if the CCT is on it's way out there should be a noticeable rattle.

When I sold mine it was on it's way out so I told the guy I sold it to to get it replaced. That was a 2000 bike with ~34k miles on it. Cost him about £60 all in I think.

Apart from that the bike was faultless in the time I had it.

I've got one. I've had it since it had 2.5k miles on it. It's had a CCT done under warranty from teh place I bought it, no real bother, don't be afraid of it. To hear it, start the engine FROM COLD and ride it gently. About 4-5k you would hear a nasty rattly noise that goes as you get over 5.5k.

Other than that, they're good bikes. I've not ridden every bike made, but to me, the brakes seem pretty decent, it tracks corners very will, doesn't get upset by road surfaces (or the lack thereof!). Goes ok, sounds ok (lose the standard can though, it weighs a ton) etc etc.

The one in your pic is a FS-1, they're slightly different, only available from 2001-2002, they've got a separate pillion pad and black rear subframe (and I don't think they had the centre stand either). Slightly different cams I think, bit more power than a standard 'F'. If you go for a later F model, about 2004/5 they changed the suspension so it's not fully adjustable. Mine's a 2004 and it's got adjusters on the fork tops.

The one in the pic's not an F Sport. F Sports had black subframe, swingarm, and frame. That one has a silver swingarm and frame. Thumbs Up Therefore it's a normal F.

Personally I wouldn't worry about the CCT. Yes you can replace them, but they can then start rattling again within 10 minutes. Mostly it's not an issue.

I just realised, I have bought 5 bikes in my time, not once have I consioucly decided to buy a certain colour. Laughing The closest I came was with the Speed Four where I said I wanted a yellow or orange one, I ended up with a blue Laughing

Fair play, quite a bit more expensive though.. You could always take a mechanically minded friend with you though.. and look for an example with a full service history as a did.

Something like this?

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201010354567694/sort/priceasc/usedbikes/price-to/3000/engine-size-bikes/490cc_to_675cc/maximum-mileage/up_to_20000_miles/maximum-age/up_to_10_years_old/model/cbr/make/honda/page/1/radius/1501/postcode/

Although it could be miles away from you. Laughing I always find Bike Trader one of the best places to look.

They're very good mate, decent power, good handling, suspension is fully adjustable and soft enough to be comfortable yet stiff enough to respond properly. That is way overpriced though, picked up my 17k 2001 for £2000 last summer, ebay is your friend! Thumbs Up

CCT is crap and mine went within 500miles of owning it.

Very simple job, cost me £60 in parts and hour or two of mine and bro's time.

You will wish you had a jeremy beadle hand by the end of it though - very fiddly.

Check the downpipes for holes and its worth noting the 16k/32k service is expensive so check that's been done. Speed sensor is another weak point - so test ride it to make sure you have a speed reading!

I would have thought thats average mileage. 33K miles is nothing if it has been serviced properly.

You can get a hell of alot more bike for £3k.

My Triumph Speed Four was £3k when it was 6 months old and had 3200 miles on it. My TDM 900 was £2.5k with 20k on the clock.

£3k for a nearly 10 year old bike with 33,000 miles on the clock is a piss take.

The CBR was steel frame until 1999, then it got a complete overhaul, including a new alloy frame and a new engine with a slight glass rather than a dipstick on pre 98 bikes.

No change 1999 or 2000, then in 2001 it got cometic changes, fuel injection, and different clocks. It was then pretty much unchanged for the rest of it's life.

I was only really commenting on the mileage, not the price. I'm always amazed at what people seem to think is high mileage on a bike these days.

Because 90% of bikes are used as weekend toys. You'll easily pick up a lower mileage bike for the similar money. That said CBR600Fs do take big miles extremely well.

im still tempted by this bike. although 33k isnt ideal, most bikes of a similar age are going for between 2500-3000 and this is slap bang in the middle with 6 months warrant, new mot and service.

Also been looking at R6 or Ninja

decisions decisions Question

Both are more extreme than the CBR600F.

Personally I'd put that money into finding a nice 2003-2004 ZX6R. That's just me though.
