I can't offer much of an answer to your question. But I can give you a link to a more detailed tutorial.

ThatHornet, just a pointer that that info is the JB for a 3G not 3GS. If you have a 3GS with firmware 3.1.3 there is no JB at the minute.

From what I read on Xsellize, if you've updated your phone via itunes then it is NOT possible to jailbreak your phone due to the updated baseband.

you can do it if your on 3.1.2 or under and follow the instructions above to create a custom firmware.

cheers Summy, so JB your phone unlocks the phone to all networks.

This sounds great but it will void my warranty and phone insurance right?

Jailbreaking is a necessary pre requisite for unlocking, but that is all. A jail broken phone is still sim locked.

On the link I sent, 2nd paragraph is a link to the unlock tutorial.

TBH I'm out of touch with it all. I'm still on 3.0 and that's on a 2g so can't offer much advise for what you're intending on doing. But I know a place that can:

Best of luck.

You can Jailbreak a 3GS on 3.1.3, but its not 100%, i had it, but i wouldn't recommend. Supposed to be a way for it to be done coming out soon though.

Im on 05.12.01 baseband but to unlock you need to be on 05.11.07 baseband.

Also I am on 3.1.3 does downgrading the firmware also down grade the baseband?

No, there is no way to downgrade baseband, and downgrading FW is impossible unless you were previously JB and had the info cache'd
