Hi guys,

Bit of a silly one really. I've just been out for a ride to test the bike after some problems and the key has fallen out while riding. Can anyone give me some advice on how to bypass the ignition until I can get a new lock set?

Yes I know I should have had a spare key made as soon as I got the bike (150miles ago), my mistake. Sad

If anyone is prepared to help (I understand it's a bit of a dodgy question), it might be best if you send me a PM if you think the answer isn't already readily available on the net.

EDIT: The bike is a ZZR600D

Thanks

Leave it in a rough area and watch it, wait for someone to try and rob it then offer them £10 to tell you how to do-it and then offer a further 5er for them to Vincent van Gogh.

If your replacing the lock then just hammer a screwdriver in and turn it with some mole grips. Once its turned you can use anything that will fit in the slot to turn it on and off.

Hi

Won't be that cheap (but cheaper than a new lockset), but you can probably get a mobile locksmith out to cut a key to the lock.

All the best

Keith

Thanks guys. I guess I should have got a quote really before playing around Keith, I'm hoping to get everything usable now for about £10 though so I doubt it would have been cheaper.

It didn't take 5 mins to get the bike running with a quick look at the haynes manual and a bit of wire. After that I managed to get the petrol cap off with a bit of force (the bolt under the locked part was missing). The seat lock has always been missing so that's not an issue.

I've set up a switch for the ignition for now and I've removed the lock bits from the petrol cover. I'll have a look for a cap for the tank tomorrow. I'm tempted not to replace the ignition lock after seeing how easy it is to bypass and just use some other kind of switch.

Thanks again. Thumbs Up Karma

a friend of mine has been riding his bike without an ignition barrel. it was pinched by a couple of young chavs outside my house who broke the lock just like marki said.
add a secret kill switch and keep it chained to something. this will deter the opportunist thieves.

A switch connected to the coils is always very useful.

theres a couple on fleabay for the 400 that might be worth looking at.

To be honest after seeing how easy it is to bypass the key I doubt I'll bother replacing it. There must be a better option.

Omega, out of interest why did you rate my post as off topic? Did you not want to know how to bypass the key?
