My m8 who bought my nsr125r came round last night with a problem, it idles but as soon as you give it some gas it starts to die, he said that when he got to it at work there was a fair bit of fuel on the floor, i put new spark plug in and no difference, when i had it there was a time when it was spewing fuel and Riossi set it up under warranty said the float level was wrong, i am thinking same thing again as you can really smell the fuel, any ideas ?
was thinking of stripping it and cleaning it (carb) any one know what the float level should be?
typical it happens now when there is a lad wanting to buy it next week.
any ideas,help

Is the fuel coming out of the overflow pipe? (I hope it is to be on the floor) If so the float is stuck open or something like that in the carb.

It could be just a bit of grit etc making the float/jet stick in which case a knock with a hammer shaft or the like may dislodge it and stop the problem. But really you want to clean the carb out so it doesn't happen again, and while there check the float setting etc.

Not sure of an exact setting mate, basically when the float is at the top it should be closing the inlet for the fuel fully.

I've cant remember what it was like in my NS when I did it (as I had a sticky float) but I've messed around with SU carbs etc and when you look at it you can see what I mean.

Just give it a good clean out etc and see how that goes.

Someone else may be able to explain a lot better than I can, sorry mate.

Hi

Does sound like the float is sticking, set wrong or the needle valve is dirty / damaged.

Float height is around 25mm I think. Take the bodywork off, take the airbox off and the take the carb off. You need a 14mm spanner to take the float bowl off. Then you can get at the floats.

Might be worth turning the fuel off and running the engine until it stalls to avoid spilling petrol all over the place.

All the best

Keith

yep took it apart and float was sticking, kieth where is the float measured from or ne1 else ? Confused
and is that 25mm fully closed or open?
sorry to mither but as it was my old bike i feel kind of responsible for it as my m8 is clueless and was just gonna buy a new carb and have it put in.
and as its the Rossendale show this weekend i rather he went on his bike than pillion.

Hi

From memory the float height is measured from the top of the float bowl (ie the bit where the float bowl seals against the carb) and the bottom of the float with the floats fully up. Think you are meant to have the carb vertical, ie with the direction of the airflow vertical (this way the needle should seal but only just).

All the best

Keith
