Am i right in thinking that the counter weights that are stuck to your wheel are usually in place to counteract the weight of the valve and such?

Had a new tyre fitted yesterday down the road from the office but above about 70mph you can really feel a strong juddering. The weights that have been stuck on the wheel are only about a third of the way round the wheel from the valve. The only thing I can think is that they have poorly balanced it...

Sound about right?

They are there to balance any weight issues with either the wheel and the tyre.

The valve is taken into consideration with the tyre manufacture so weights shouldn't be needed to compensate for the valve.

Due to manufacturing processes though you will 9/10 get a heavy spot somewhere so balancing is needed. Sounds like they have done a rush job and it needs doing again if everything else is tight.

Balancing isn't just about the valve etc, tyres have heavy spots too (usually marked with a paint blob) so a lot of things need to be taken into account (i.e. the wheel weights prob wont be exactly opposite the valve). If the vibration wasn't there before it could be a wheel balancing issue but tbh loads of people don't even bother balancing their wheels and lots of things can cause a juddering.

Take it back and have a moan, they might check it again for you Thumbs Up .

...or they've skewed the axle, or not bolted it on tightly.

Either way, if it was fine before and it's shagged now, you know who did it. It's up to them to figure it out.

Yeah the only reason I say this is that when I originally ordered the tyre they said they might not be able to ballance the tyre because the machine was playing up, they didnt mention anything when I took the wheel in to have it fitted...

Everything is tight and there were no problems before...

Single sided swing arm, and I fitted the wheel back on so its all square and fine.

Makes no difference except for the requirement of a special spindle to balance it on.

You mean a piece of cane and two garden chairs. It's the most accurate way to balance a wheel Wink

the paint spots are usually fitted in the same position as the valve so i would have thought they marked a light spot.

Well I'm taking the wheel back to be rebalanced after work but i was just wondering if the yellow '05' stamped on the tyre wall was anything to do with light or heavy spots as it seems to be bang on opposite the valve....

There are normally a few dots. Can't remember exactly what each means but one (think yellow) is a light/heavy spot and the other is a high spot of the tyre iirc (possibly red). Thinking about it, it would make more sense to mark a light spot to position next to the valve rather than mark the heavy spot to position opposite the valve.

Whenever I have had tyres mounted recently though it seems the techs have proably ignored the dots anyway when using balancing machines.

on pirelli's there are 2 red dots next to each other about an inch apart. you should line the valve up between those dot's.
