"Your bikes been on fire sometime over christmas, nobody knows how, or when, but the shed remained locked all the time"

10 VERY good reasons to disconnect your bikes battery when you lock it away for any duration:
1) Your bike will possibly catch fire
2) Your bike will then heat things up without you knowing
3) Your bike will then combust, spontaniously
4) You will likely be unaware this is occuring
5) you will find a very charred bike
6) You will lose a considerable amount of hair
7) You will have to break/scrap the bike
8) your storage place will need a severe, heavy duty tidy
9) You will regret not disconnecting your battery
10) You'll have photos of the event which will continually intrigue/annoy you

Jamie_stokes, i'm unsure whether you fucked the bike up for me, or whether it did it itself, however i'll not blame you for flogging me a bike which after 2 months and < 800miles combusts.

I must say, this is quite disheartening!
However it is human nature to enjoy other peoples inconvienience, and that is all it is, so please, enjoy!

Needless to say im breaking it if anyone wants anything...

Mechanically it's fine, i think there may be an electrical fault though.

Ha ha, how on earth could that have been Jamie Stokes fault? I rode that bike when he still had it and it was fine, he barely did any work on it!

I'm curious as to why its burnt out (quite spectacularly) two cdi's ins uch a short duration even though i was assured it was fully sorted. I'm not blaming him directly however i question his methods now.

Live and learn Don't buy a bike that has eaten a CDI and has simply been replaced.

I think it was just very unlucky, although having my Divvy break down after being rested up for a few days in the middle of Cumbria would suggest bad luck liked my riding last year Mr. Green

Although the Divvy was more so my fault having not cleaned the carbs out in months.

This used to be my bike before randomly exchanging it for the GSX. Before that it used to be Swanny's. The battery/electrics failed on Swanny and it had a new battery fitted.

KLR600, you saw it on the Aber ride a year ago. It is the bike I did over 400 miles on in one day. It had a service a week before that ride.

Only fault I had was the vacuum fuel tap not shutting off, was rebuilt with a rebuild kit and worked fine since. Also had a bit of rust jam one of the needle valves open. Carbs were cleaned and oil changed twice.

Other things were the chain & Sprockets - I did that and got it checked when I had it serviced.

Brakes were cleaned and new pistons/pads.

New rear shocks and front springs.

Heated grips were fitted by me but I think they were removed by Jamie but not sure. Can you remove the tank and take a picture from the back of the bike looking down at the engine and battery please.

When I got rid of it, I gave it to Jamie for payment on getting the GSX from Liverpool. There was nothing at all wrong with the electrics and my thoughts are mice chewing the wires.

I don't think it is wires being worn and shorting against the frame.

The reg is private and stood for Riverview Rider Training in Bolton. It is apparently worth £400. The bike was a 2000 W reg.

Clocks are rare and can sell for over £100. The reg rec usually takes out the tacho and people are after these clocks. I'm saddened to hear about it's demise.

Check on here too and say it was Stelmer and Jamies bike:

https://www.bikersoracle.com/er5/forum/

Plenty of pictures of it on here:

Thom you claim that its the cdi thats caught alight, which is right near the rear of the pillion seat,(near the grab rail area) the seat above the cdi is unburnt so i highly doubt the cdi has caught alight, looks more like the battery area when the worst dammge is to me.
Take the seat and tank off and get some pics of the cdi/battery box/ carb area ect.
I'd be putting money on mice or a chaffed/trapped wire , that bike as you know was running fine, and ran as you put it "perfectly" all the way to newcastle , it was mechanicaly sound and a good bike.
IIRC the cdi doesn't even have voltage there when the ignition is off , the only places that do as far as i know is the main wire down to the starter/ and the reg/reg wire.

Yeah, I'd love to see under the tank and seat. If not mice then most definitely a trapped wire.

Check the main wire from battery to the solenoid. Something could have gone wrong here. The rest of the wires are fused and the fuse will blow. This looks to be the work of a severe short that has caused the battery to either gas violently and ignite on a spark or just explode.

Hey lads, as ive told jamie and stelmer ive had my enxtdoor neighbour have a look at the bike for me (hes a fireman) and he said the fire has started around the CDI hwoever due to ventilation and draugths caused by smoke convection its drawn the fire down to left hand side where cool fresh oxygenated air was.

No idea how its started yet but it's a bitch of a rebuild, fortunately im breaking it and hopefully selling the plate.

Im really lost as to why the CDI has gone up so spectacularly but i havent actually seen the bike in the flesh, the only thing i can think is that the fireman has gotta the part names mixed up with the reg/rec which can heat it. even then this is most unusual.

Im picking up either a touno or a viffer at the end of april hopefully although it could be a new car yet im undecided. fortunately breaking this bike will give me about a grand - more than the bike was worth!

Hmm, I've been thinking and a minor short left undisturbed could escalate into something major.

Reg Rec fins poke through an opening in the rear mudguard to the back wheel and is subject to spray. Perhaps salt got in and somehow caused a small short.

Main thing is your shed is airtight and this saved the shed and the other things you had in it. It's also good that nobody opened the door when it was alight. This could've been very bad!!!!

We don't even know when it was on fire thats whats weird! we know it was between xmas and march 3rd but thats it!

Its all so odd, not looking forward to seeing it though... I've seen fire damage in my kitchen before and the charred reamins and strange shapes of things actually play tricks with your mind! Shocked

There has never been a mouse or rat in that shed, they can't get in the buggar, furthermore both our sheds are baited and trapped at least 5 times on each (my dad used to do pest control)...

If theres been a mouse get in there i have been the most unlucky guy ever for it to eat my bike. But no, i dont think so. I'
