If I went to buy a bike with no Tax (currently on SORN) and wanted to ride it back legally 100 miles what documents would I need to take with me to go to the Post office in order for me to get a Road Tax disc.

I would have a new M.O.T certificate, and

a print out of the bike added to my ebike insurance the night before (not an official cover note) and paid for by visa.

The small piece of the V5 that is given to the new keeper.

Besides the money is there anything else I would need?

An actual cover note or one that looks like one - generally they are pretty harsh if they don't think it's genuinely printed by the insurance company.

Sometimes post offices say they will only accept the original insurance documents not printed yourself or copys.

Maybe you could ask the seller to tax it with you present?

It will get sent to the previous owner - and you'll need the document number from the V5 to do it too, I believe.

Bollocks, yeah, you're right.

Is the number not on the tear off slip?

The 'green slip' does have the Document Number - presumably he knows/can get hold of the reg number.
However it still won't be technically legal as he's not displaying and they may not have updated the information the police have access to yet as well.

Also, quite possible ebike wouldn't have updated the insurance database.

Thanks for the replies.
I really don't want to risk getting pulled over and fined/points.

I don't know the full registration yet.
It does have 11 months M.O.T and he does have the V5.

I have fully comp on my current bike and have emailed ebike who explained how I can add a bike to my insurance the night before I go to pick it up if I win the auction.
So I would only be able to print it out myself.

I would need to get a taxi £15 from home to catch a train £27, taxi to his house £15, walk to post office, fill up with petrol, ride home.

Alternatively I can hire a van for £50 which allows me 150 miles, £5 for the 50 miles plus the deisel for 200 miles.

Mate, hire the van. So much easier.

You wouldn't get points - it's non endorsable.
Also, make sure you don't go 71mph on the motorway/dual carriageways - that could see you getting pulled over, a fine and points.

Everything's a risk, in my experience no tax is a pretty small one.
