Should PSU fans always be on?

Just installed a new Mobo & PSU but the PSU isn't spinning. Do some only operate when your system gets hot? If not, what can i try to get it to spin?

cpu fans may not always spin but a psu will.

but lol and yeh its probably just the fact its a quiet psu

the spu will auto shutdown if it gets too hot so unless its doing that i wouldnt worry. just stick your ear to it and try to hear the whirr

There are some PSUs that only activate their fans when they get hot; there are even some fanless ones, but when CustomPC ran a PSU test, the fanless ones all blew up!

Hi Misc.

I know you've solved your problem, but -

I had the same PSU, 12 months ago, and the fan genuinely didn't work.
Lucky I was wearing my brown trousers that day, as I got mighty scared when I realised the fan wasn't spinning. Could have taken out all my components!

I sent it back for a refund and bought a more expensive PSU. Ebuyers return system was dead easy.

yeah watercooling is good

keeps my 4870x2 at 35 degrees under load
and my e8600 @ 4.5ghz at 4-45
