Pistons and rings like you already know have a life expectancy in 2 strokes. I havent owned one so wouldnt know, when it starts to run funny or weird like hard to start and slow or revs fast on idle for a reason you cant explain usually means its time for a piston and ring change. That is of course, if the barrel and bearings aren't dead too.

pistons on bikes with coated bores do more like 15000 miles at the most, for bikes like aprilia RS250 they recommend 10000 miles at better dealers, my TDR250 with coated bores did just over 16000 miles before it seized, RGV250 owners usually change them at 15000 miles the main problem is unlike a steel liner that can be rebored you will scrap the barrel or pay a load to get the thing welded up and recoated, check out the price of a new piston kit and top gasket set for your bike first, may be cheap enough job just to put your mind at rest

Idle for 10 minutes doesnt sound like a great idea...
Have you checked compression?

cheapo test... pull out the spark plug and put your thumb over the hole... get someone to kick it over/try and crank it.

It should blow your thumb off with ease.. if it doesnt, you have a compression problem, and that could be why!

Paddy is right, compression is normally a new top end, which on a 2 stroke is less than a 2 hour job to do propperly. If its a new top end and piston with rings and your still losing compression the piston has probably been installed wrong and you'll need a new top end.

Don't let it idle for 10 minutes! This is bad for 2 strokes. Best thing to do is set off after 20 seconds or so of idle, and just keep it below 5krpm for a few minutes and gradually increase till the engine is at full temp.

My engine has no pull at all under 5k rpm lol.. thats when it starts moving properly..
i sit on it, kick it over and put my gloves on, then edge it out the garden/out the yard at work then ride off.. carefully, but not taking it 2/3rds the way on the rev counter.

After 5 mins of riding i give it more and more beans
