Module One Speed Problems

Hi I'm new here,

I decided i wanted a bike and so went and did the CBT and loved it! Took a few more lessons and did the theory and everything was going fantastic and i'm really enjoying it. I decided against getting a 125 and instead i want a bigger restricted bike as i'll be on 60mph roads daily and i think a 125 will be too much hard work going that speed.

Yesterday i was doing the module one practice, everything was going great until the swerve practice, first time did it slow, then increased speed until i was confident and went as quick as i dared on the corner then nailed it going towards the speed trap, not fast enough . Tried and tried again but couldn't get anything above 49!

I think my problem is a mix of the 'orrid little chinese 125 i'm using and the fact im 17.5 stone. The only thing i can think of is going close to 30mph round the bend, how can that be safe?

Anyone got any suggestions for getting my large backside past that speed trap?

how old are you ?
if your not old enough to have to do the test on like a 500+ then the only thing i can really suggest is go faster on your aproach, get more confident taking the corner at a higher speed before the swerve.

ah right, well the only other option really is to get more speed up on your approach, like earlier on.
on the course do you get a fairly big run up, a slight corner then a small straight before the swerve?

Do you know what speed you are achieving at the moment?

Do you know about the whole counter steering thing? Because if it's swerving at speed that's the issue then practise that and you should get it easy.

If you do know what it is then ignore this post.

But if you push the right handlebar away from you then the bike will move to the right and vice-versa with the left. This lets you swerve much faster as you have more control of your steering.

Yeah i get the counter steering and can handle the speed its just getting the thing up to the speed.

I had the same problem mate, and to be honest i found that going fast in the corner didn't help. I ended up clipping a cone which is an instant fail, and it was still 47.

I'd say it was definately your bike, crappy chinese you say? Are you keeping it in 2nd during the manouver? I used 2 different riding schools as i failed twice with the first one. They both had YBRs but the second had a hell of alot more to give in 2nd gear than the first bike did.
Are you using a school for your practise? I assume you must be as you know what speed you were doing.

I haven't got a bike atm but i'd love to have a ride once i've passed the test and got a big bike .

I've never been a fan of 125s, admittedly they don't like me and my weight either lol.

The test is ridiculous because some people have 50+ bhp to do the same thing as people with >10 bhp.

It took me 3 attempts to pass, 49kph each time in 2nd gear on the first two attempts. got 55KPH for both avoidance and emergency stop by quick shifting into 3rd as I sped up out of the corner, also try and use a good line to stay clear of the cones as you go through but keep the speed about 20ish to avoid the need to brake or panic like i did.

Personally what I think got me up to speed was the shift up to 3rd (I didn't use the clutch either, something my father taught me but not so recommended) and just pinning the throttle afterwards.

I had the same problem on my test. Only managed 49kph through the speed trap first time. I did the following the second time and got through at 54kph.

Start accelerating mid bend, you should be on the throttle stop just before straightening out. Keep the throttle pinned until after you pass through the speedtrap. The engine should be on the or very near to the limiter. As soon as you pass the speedtrap, release the throttle and countersteer like you never have before, then brake hard to stop before the line.

More acceleration=drop a tooth on the front. You'll be able to gain speed exiting the corner, not through it.

The main problem is that the bikes aren't yours. You have no idea if they are capable of reaching that speed due to lack of maintenance. Get the instructor to show you how its done, if he can't do it then your wasting your time and it may be worth trying a different school.

Only other advise I can think of is to take the corner as wide as possible, you'll maintain a higher speed.

i passed mine last month on my lil 125 and i'm 16 stone (and a bit) i just built up speed in 2nd going around the bend and nailed it wide open before i finished turning and kept it in 2nd
