PostPosted: 01:12 - 28 Feb 2010    Post subject: Driving lessons question Reply with quote

I'm looking to do my car test this year (yeah yeah, been saying that for about 3 years now!) but I don't know whether to go for an intensive driving course or just take lessons once or twice a week.

I've been on the road for 6 years on bikes so I'm not nervous about actually being on the road, I just need to learn how to drive a car and get used to how much bigger it is than a bike.

I can get more hours instruction cheaper if I block book lessons so obviously the intensive driving thing is better value for money but will it be too much information to process?

I'm wanting to get it over and done with when I come to do it and I don't particularly want to drag out for ages.

So anyone have any experiences of intensive driving courses? Any general opinions?

Edited because I'm a retard at maths!

I wouldn't bother with the intensive course. I've done 8 hours of driving and I'm ready for my test.

Also 20 hours for £400 and 2 hours for £40 equates to the same amount of money Wink

D'oh, well It worked out cheaper when I was comparing and looking around last night anyway, hope my driving skills are better than my maths skills!

Another problem I have (should have mentioned this in the first post) is that I don't have a car to practice in outside of having lessons. My mum's insurers wanted £680 to add me to her policy and I'd rather spend that on driving lessons instead of picking up bad habits without a driving instructor. I kind of like the idea of doing it in a week though, just get it over and done with.

Neither do I as my parents both drive automatics. My 8 hours were all with my driving instructor.

Once you learn the controls, it'll be easy as you already have all the road craft ready to transfer from bike to car.

Doing driving lessons at the moment, 14 hours and I'm ready for my test already, it's just hammering out the manouveres that's the difficult part really.

Intensive courses really aren't needed unless you need to pass within about two weeks.

Road sense you already have etc as ms51 said.

i did both, i started off having lessons once a week for a while but as i work silly shifts it became difficult getting booked in. in the end i sacked it off and booked a test and 3 Day course for my days off

If i were you i would see if the place you are looking to book with do a free assessment lesson (some places charge you for itand then knock it off the price when you book),they will take you out for a hour or 2 and then tell you have long it will take to get you up to test standard

Free one hour driving lesson.

I used it and got my lesson with the AA, my sister used it and got her lesson with a local company so it varies who you get but still worth it.

I am using a small local company, only has two cars to teach in but the guy is totally genuine and all his business is by word of mouth. They gave me a free assessment lesson and are £22/hour.

Plus, the instruction car is this:

I did an intensive course in Wolverhampton over the spread of a week. I had been on the bikes for a couple of years.

They put me up in a hotel, and I did maybe 3-4 hours of lessons a day. I was still pretty ropey by the time I was due for test on Friday, but with a lot of luck I passed it.

I had completed a handful of driving lessons local to me, and the base I was stationed at the time, but once a week I found left too big a gap to consolidate what I learned, being full time on the bikes between times.

Road sense wasn't the concern, it was the physical spatial awareness and controls in the car that was causing me issue.

It wasn't cheap, but peanuts compared to what I have since paid to pass a HGV licence, so it's all relative I guess. At the time, I had limited weeks free so just went in guns blazing in the hope of getting it out of the way.

I drive a Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec with the AA. £21 a lesson when you bulk buy 12 (refunded if you don't use them all). Plus you get all the online theory and hazard perception stuff which I'll be putting to the test on Wednesday when I have my theory.

Yeah, that Vauxhall is the 1.6 Turbo Arctic VXR, if you bulk buy with mine too he will discount a few quid and refund what you don't use.

As for theory stuff I really am not sure on that, but he does have books he could give me. Laughing.

Although he does always tell me to check my blind spot to "Look for Paul coming up on his motorbike." which I find quite morbid. Laughing.

OK thanks guys Thumbs Up

I think I'll call a few driving schools around here and try and get a free first lesson and see if they'll refund any lessons I don't use if I end up passing my test sooner than expected.

I'm in the same boat as duhawkz really, I work 5 days in 7 any time between 9am and 10pm so I'd be looking to take some time off work to do it.

Just an update on this, I passed my driving test today first time with 2 minors Cool

I ended up booking this week off work and doing a 20 hour intensive driving course. I think if I'd of done it any other way I wouldn't have passed today as the test centre is 40 minutes away from where I live so most of my lessons would have been getting to and from the test area. I found jumping back into the car the next day after driving it for 5 hours the day before meant doing stuff like finding the bite on the clutch for the first few miles was loads easier instead of faffing around at the start of my lessons.

Anyway, had my first lesson last Sunday and passed today, happy days!!!!!

I think I could have taken it sooner and still passed but I just wanted to be totally confident really, I don't regret doing a few more hours than I needed to as it ended up in a pass so no need mess around with re-tests and all that!
