I've always been a fan of highland, who make decently lightweight adventure/dirt 950cc bikes. However they were previously very hard to get hold off with sparse and sporadic dealer coverage.

It seems the Swedish firm has been resurrected in the US with the same basic model range they are expanding on:

While it seems japanese and german manufacturers are happy to pile on the pounds in both non-sports street bikes and 'adventure' bikes, they have taken the view that people who want to go on an 'adventure' probably don't want to have to pick up a bike that weighs nearer to small car when in the middle of a remote jungle.

Their new range also includes a 350cc trail bike (good capacity which is becoming more popular - for some time people have actually been sleeving down husabergs to make them less aggressive/more usable) and a 950cc twin road/sports bike with a spondon frame claimed to weigh in at 144kg!

Now being made in the US I doubt they're going to be cheap unfortunately and quality may still be a bit questionable, but it's certainly going to be interesting to see these models out there.

I think the 950cc dirt bikes could definitely be the ultimate 'round the world' bike for those in a hurry - still capable of handling high speed motorways, but also should be less phased by tight gnarly single track.

Light weight, if ugly, road bike.

Claimed to be 128kgs I believe - not bad for a 85hp 950cc twin!
