Hi

2 stroke or 4 stroke?

With a 2 stroke that has run out of 2 stroke oil the chances are that the piston is trashed, but a fair chance that it won't have suffered any more damage. New piston and probably a rebore. If it is gearbox oil then it has probably done enough damage to make it cheaper to source another engine.

With a 4 stroke running low on oil is likely to do far more damage (most 4 strokes use plane bearings which needs a good high pressure oil supply otherwise they are destroyed).

All the best

Keith

Hey,
After a little googling it seems that there are both 2t and 4t versions according to various specification webpages but saying that the majority of hits from questions relate to 4t engines.

I would say if its seized and its 4t your going to have a lot of fun learning about it as you take it appart and assess whats gone bust heh.

Anywho, i would suggest getting a manual for the bike (although as its an import chances of a good service manual are pretty slim), or have a look at a number of single stroke 50cc scooter engines (their all pretty much the same to be honest (probly SOHC - single over head cam).

Get the engine out, get the head off, free up the piston, check out the piston/rings/bore/rockers&bearings/cam etc, take some pictures and we can let you know how they look, from there i would think you might need to look a little further into the engine (low end bearings etc) but am sure someone else will tune in at some point about the lower end.

Let us know how you get on.

regards

-Jvr

Ps, getting it fixed by a mechanic would no doubt cost more than the bike is worth, doing it yourself the cost of parts may be a fair bit so also consider the price of parts vs a whole engine unit.

thanks guys,
btw... i think its 4 stroke. the oil input is separate to the petrol, someone told me thats one way to tell. It only cost me 85quid, but thats still a lot for me... the person who sold said 'easily fixed by a willing learner.' well im a willing learner and i have no idea what to do. im half thinking i should just put it back on ebay and try and make my money back

With a 4 stroke the engine is lubed with oil pumped around from the crankcases (ignoring dry sump engines). With a 2 stroke the oil is mixed with the fuel, but that can be done either manually (ie you mix oil with petrol when filling up), or you add it to a tank and a pump squirts in a small amount to the engine intake.

All the best

Just under the exhaust?

Also, does that say Xingyue Xysport?

Ok then a bit of googling would suggest its a 4 stroke.

There seem to be loads of sites offering parts for chinese bikes, so the next step is to start getting it apart. Get some good tools if you haven't already and try and find a service manual of some form. As above, most 50cc 4t bikes will be SOHC and very simple, so get a few for a range of other mopeds and have a read through.

Manuals can be found in the threads at the top of workshop.

A 50cc 4-stroke chinese scooter engine that has been run on no/low oil to the point of failure will be scrap.

Expect to spend a hell of a lot more than £85 getting it roadworthy. If you have a chance to take it back and get at least some of your money back, do it. Otherwise I'd break it for spares on ebay.
