Hey all.

Recently I bought a Marauder 125, but it didn't have the front L plate on it. So I went and bought a pair of plates and took a fair bit of time putting on the front plate by putting holes in it and using cable wire to tie them on.

Then this guy at work tells me you don't have to legally have one on the front, but he's kind of old so I'm not sure if he's right or if the rules have changed since he did it? or maybe he's just playing me up.

I have looked at older threads and searched the net but can't find for definite what the law states on having L plate at the front as well as back.

Can someone please clear it up for me, as I would prefer riding around without the L on the front.

Thanks

Front and back. I got away with just one on the back for 6 months, but in hindsight it was a stupid thing to do. Not worth the points.

https://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/LearnerAndNewDrivers/RidingMotorcyclesAndMopeds/DG_4022430

"Compulsory basic training (CBT) was introduced in 1990 to help reduce the very high accident rate among inexperienced motorcyclists. CBT must be completed before a learner moped or motorcycle rider is allowed to ride on the road with L-plates or D-plates in Wales."

Or if you want to read the exact wording of the laws then you want to have a look at Motor Vehicles (Driving Licenses) Regulations 1996, Schedule 4, Regulation 15.

But in short, the guy at your work is wrong, you're are required to have L plates showing to the front and the rear of your bike. Failure to do so could result in 3 points and a £60 fine for each L plate that doesn't meet the regulations.

If you want less L plates on your bike then the best answer to that is to do your test.

Thanks for the posts guys.

I currently have L plates on the front and back anyway, and didn't consider removing the front plate until I had the information the guy gave me validated. Turns out he was wrong then!

As for passing tests, just got back from the theory centre with a pass certificate Smile

Now onto MOD1..

Thanks again people.

The guy at work is probably getting L plates confused with number plates. Front number plates were abolished decades ago. I think it was because they acted like blades when involved in RTAs and caused massive injuries to pedestrians.

I used to stick mine down into the fairing, and you could just about see the top of the L, but I was never pulled for it. Before then I just kept one in my rucksack that looked beaten up, and if I had been pulled I would have said it had just come off and I was going to put it on at home.

Most coppers don't really worry about it I think, it's just one of those things they might do you for if they were doing you for something a bit more serious at the same time.
