Crazy or stupid, you decide.

Looking to downgrade my bike from my GS450e to a CD200 Benly (1980) which is exactly what im after, bar the 6 volt ignition system.

Things i want to know are:

Is it possible to charge Sat navs/mobiles/whatever via a 6Volt system by means of a cigarette lighter sockett?

Would it be possible to upgrade the lights to either brighter 6volt bulbs or cheaply upgrade the bike to 12volt?

Would a CD200 take panniers and topbox ok?

Thanks

Insert a voltage doubler into your cigarette socket circuit?

Confused Question

Would that drain the battery even quicker??

I thought the CD185 was 6V and the CD200 was 12V?

The 1980 CD200 Benly was a 6V.
12V from 1981+

Basically all im interested in is whether i can charge a sat nav whilst the bike is running by connecting a cigarette lighter socket to the battery with the car charger?

What would happen?

Im not good at physics so electricity is lost on me, anywhere i can buy a voltage doubler that i can wire in??

I suspect better to get a regulated 5v supply and get one that will charge from USB or similar and use that.

I used to have a topbox on my 185 Benly so there should be no problem with the 200 (as long as you can get a rack to fit).

Interesting you should say that as my satnav charges via a usb port connection and can connect to a pc too.

The sat nav in question is a Garmin Nuvi 250W, the battery does not last very long so it really needs to be permanently connected to the power supply to do long distance runs...

If i connected a cigarette lighter socket to my 6v battery and then put the car charger in, would it work, assuming it only needed 5v??

The cigarette lighter adaptor circuit for your sat nav will be based on 12V input to 5V output. 6V input may not work at all.

The easiest solution if you or a mate are a dab hand with a soldering iron is a simple circuit based on an LM2940CT. It's a low Vdrop Voltage Regulator that only needs minimum 5.5V input for a regulated 5V output at 1A. A capacitor across the input and output stage and thats it. No myriad of components. You could make it on veroboard easy enough.

https://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?C=SO&U=strat310&T=Nottingham+-+Central&ModuleNo=8063&ma=Nottingham+-+Central+-+LM2940CT+1A+Low+Dropout+Regulator

The most vital bit is making sure you get the +5V output connected to the correct charging input of your Sat Nav. You get that wrong and you'll fry it.
