Hi guys and girls,

My friends and I are doing the May Day Run this year for the first time. We're all L-platers and are really looking forward to it, and I thought it may be useful for at least two of us to have radios just in case something happens (as two of us are first aiders).

Does anyone have any suggestions on what radio system to use?

Thanks in advance Smile

Have you not heard of mobile phones? They are a pretty good invention...worth getting if you want / need to stay in touch with people. Idea

Obviously we cant use phones whilst riding.

Plus a set of radios would come in handy when we go hiking/mountain climbing.

The other reason is it'd be nice to be able to talk to each otherwhilst riding. Doing that kinda distance on a 125 takes a bit longer than our attention spans prefer.

The May Day run consists of meeting up at either the Ace Cafe or Locksbottom early in the morning of the 3rd of May, and heading off to Hastings en-masse around 10am.

Maplin seem to have reinstated their deal for free helmet headets when you buy the Midland G7 radios:

See the special offer in the right hand column.

£80 is a bit steep, but could be useful.

That run is a fucking nightmare, filtering for miles and takes about 2 hours to get a bag of chips.

If you want to get radios that work, you need to spend some cash, Autocom of similar. To be honest I doubt you will really need them, they are a bit of a gimmick, especially for a short run like that.

The midland G7 radios are decent cheap radios (got 2 myself connnected to an autocom unit) but the maplin headsets are shit for anything above 40mph. Autocom or Starcom are expensive but are top bits of kit and allow you to connect your phone, gps, mp3 player etc and work well up to about 100mph where wind noise makes things a bit hard to hear in my helmet.

It's worth spending a bit of dosh. Me and a mate bought cheap ones. And although they worked, and had VOX, the quality was poor.
