XT350 Electrical fault

My XT has decided not to start and is not getting a spark. I'm just wondering if there's a way to check the CDI as the manual just says to take it to a dealer for testing?

The problem just appeared overnight without me touching the bike so it doesn't seem like it would be a broken wire or anything caused by vibration or wires getting pinched etc. It could be a corrosion issue as the bike was out in the rain for a few weeks recently but I've checked all the obvious connector blocks and the ignition and kill switches and they're all fine, not sure where else to look really?

Check the fuses, and give them a wiggle. I had no power at all on my old CB250RS, turned out to be a bit of corrosion on the fuse contacts, a wiggle sorted it. The fuses are the glass cylinder type.

I'd be extremely surprised if it doesn't. May not particularly obvious, but look for a black box somewhere near the battery and try to get the lid off it.

I'm almost certain it doesn't as I've never found them (on a very simple bike) and there is no mention of them in the manual. There is however meant to be a single 10 amp circuit breaker which appears to be missing!

I need to go over all the wiring again with a fine toothed comb but if there's no broken wires I think it must be either the CDI unit or the ignition control unit. The manual is not very clear on testing the latter and says the former must be tested by a dealer. I guess the missing circuit breaker could have contributed to either of these becoming damaged.

You can take it to a bike shop to have the wiring checked but its expesive i think, sad story as its a lovey bike. I have had the privalige of working on an old 550 XT.

A little look on CMSNL shows an inline fuse near the positive terminal on the battery, which could be the problem. Do the lights or anything else work?

Also the usual check of connectors for corrosion, including the killswitch contacts. Multimeter and a wiring diagram is the way to check wires. Takes time, but works.

I think that must be the circuit breaker I was talking about, not a conventional fuse but it's not present on mine anyway, I guess someone's bypassed it. All the other electrics work though so it wouldn't be that.

I've checked the operation of the killswitch, ignition switch and kickstand switch with a multimeter so I don't think it's any of them. I've also checked the ignition coil, HT lead and plug cap and all have the correct resistance. I'll keep checking the wiring but I'd like to be able to eliminate the CDI and the igniton control unit too as they're the only things left really other than a broken wire.

Ok, it's running again, corrosion in a connector block fixed with some carb cleaner and some sand paper and zero pounds sterling
