Another what bike type thing.

Looking to get my first big bike after 2 years of riding a moped for 6 months and the rest on my 125.

I have been looking at insurance prices aswell.

TPO

ZX7 = nice bike, love the retro look £400
Ducati 600ss = Well it is a Ducati, I fancy a V twin, £400
GSXR 600 SRAD = Looks awesome, nice quick cheap IL4, £900!!!

I am just looking for bikes for <1.5k preferably less than that and max £500 insurance.
With the Ducati, what is it like to live with an older Ducati? I mean every day use. I also have to do winter but I may keep my 125 for those wet, snowy and windy days.

Thanks

I would avoid the 600ss, They are slow as shit and is likely the povertity spec version with a single disc brake and mediorce suspention.
I believe they have 50 something horse power which is CB500 territory.
Also the electrics are terrible. Laughing

Not sure about an SRAD never had much experiance with them, I sat on one once, it was alright Laughing

ZX7R's are ment to be pretty cool, they look good and have a really good engine but apparantly handle like a barge and have those duff Tokico 6 pot caliper that sieze up alot.

It would be my pick of the ones you suggested.

I almost did the 600ss actually, i coudln't find the one i wanted though with low mileage. Im not sure about everyday use, i was told on here that it was one of the better Dukes to go with.
i see the SRAD as a chavvy bike so i'd never touch it.

I went for the ZX7R.
Just all round bad. Cool Thumbs Up

With older Ducati's: Electrics aren't great, dry clutch can be a bit of a pain in traffic once it's hot, Dark model (poverty spec as Chris said) has a single disc up front but most say it's good enough and also older models are carbed Thumbs Up

(I like that 7R ^^^)

My Bro has a 7r, its an obese hippo to move around.

Have you considered a CBR600, Hornet, fazer?

All are more than fast enough for the road, cheapish to insure and not as heavy as the 7r.

Also open to other bike suggestions.

I am just wondering what to get. Ideally I want an SP2 or something later on but I am sure I will either kill myself or loose my license or both at the same time if I go straight to litre.

I don't like cbr 600's, everyone has them and I don't think they are very nice to look at. Newer ones are nicer but more expensive.

Hornet is a definiate possibility but not check insurance on one of those yet and I imagine it will be damn expensive.

Fazer, not my cup of tea. Nice bikes but the proportions look wrong to me.

I want to make sure I like how it looks, has enough power so that I won't get bored, handles well, feels planted to the road and cheap to insure.

Yep you're right. 900 and some 750's had a dry clutch.

the zx7r is fat compared to most sports bikes, but they look awesome imo.

Its only fat when your moving it around at slow speeds or in the garage etc, out on the road its very very stable and more than quick enough. Its also got low down grunt unlike a lot of 600 sports.
You will also find you are very leant over with a long reach to the bars, ass up head down is the position. I had a wee go on tuttons A1P up and down the road, i felt like i was sat bolt upright Very Happy

The tokico front brakes aren't the most pleasurable, mine were a complete state after winter but they dont take that long to sort out.

Its also cheap to insure as you have seen, another good thing about them is i havent seen many others about.

I think the 7r is a solid choice, though i wouldnt say no to an srad either Thumbs Up

edit: Killa that looks mint in black

Against a modern GSXR1000 my 7R is dated in terms of the tech i must admit.
I have been on a ride with various machines, i would just say that the GSXR750 is better on handling but its marginal. The Suzuki 750 is close on performance so base it from that i guess.
The Tokicos i must admit are a bugger to sort once they have been through a winter.
I don't know if you saw my threads about them....turned out to be shit discs i bought from Ebay Sad

Would go for a Ducati 600 Monster myself. No pointless plastic. Not a tedious generic Jap clonemobile. Looks the bollocks. Inexpensive to buy. Reasonable to insure.

I had a Ducati 600ss many years ago. Very slow (50 bhp), poor build quality and electrics, almost shaked itself to bits. Crap brakes, very small bike and very dated to everything else out there. On the plus side, its unusual, handled quite well and sounded good.
Personally I would consider something else, I bought a ZX6R after that and it was a revalation.

There was probably a number of threads, it might just confuse matters more mate im afraid.
I warped the original set of discs for reasons i couldn't understand.
I later found out that was because the forks had taken a knock and one side was lower than the other. After refurb and new discs, it was still shite (dragging) after a lot of fucking about it ended up being the discs £210 pair from ebay. I changed them for EBC and they were back to normal.
Look for misaligned forks, dirt in the seal groves in caliper, master cyclinder (unlikely).
PM me if you want more info, i've been over them so many times, sadly im hot on the topic. Thumbs Up

O RLY?

https://www.crosslink-powder-coating.com/images/pics/pink-ducati-002.jpg

IMO, the Cheap Ducatis Like that are nothing but poor machines that are a pain to keep running that have a heritage.

Compare a CB500 to a Ducati Monster Dark 600 and they will be very similar, except there is more than a 50% chance the CB will start in the morning. The Ducati obviously looks better but is that enough to live with the other floors?

The lower tech Ducatis do have certain foibles, it's true. But sometimes it's good to have a bit of temperament and character, rather than Jap bland reliability.

Depends what goes wrong really. Ducati's tend to develop problems that aren't what you'd expect from what i've read.
Mind you, when a Duke is running sweet, i bet it would take something pretty good to beat that experience.

IMO cheap, entry level ducati's are for those more interested in the name on the tank than the actual bike, it's just ass jewellery.

Thats what people say when they are trying to justify the bike in pieces in the garage Razz . I really don't see reliability as bland, I also don't think it's possible to say that a ducati has this undefinable "character" just because it is a ducati. All bikes have character, my car has character, just a character I'm not all that fond of; its slow, tatty and handles like crap Thumbs Up .

This undescribable non quantifiable "character" that ducatis have is just marketing spiel to warrant the extra on the price tag. Thumbs Down
