Went out for a blast on the bike this afternoon and came back to find a nasty puncture in my 315 mile old rear tyre Evil or Very Mad

It appears to have gone straight through and has been hissing like a mentalist snake Rolling Eyes

Can it be saved or is the tyre a write off?

Sorry can't upload a photo as my USB cable's gone walkies Neutral

How big is the hole? anything <4mm can be plugged, Hell if it is smaller your tyreman may shock you by drilling it out to 4mm.

While those home puncture repair kits can fix holes upto 3mm too.

if it is a gash then no, if it is in the side wall then no.

Whereabouts on the tyre is it? It will depend on which part of the tread it is on!

Cheers guys,

As I don't have any kind of stand (paddock, Abba) to remove the rear wheel, would it be safe to inflate to correct pressure and ride to the garage around 5 - 6 miles? Bearing in mind that air IS leaking.

Also, having the tyre repaired/plugged, does this restrict the speed at which i can ride on the tyre?

5 miles at 30mph is 10 minutes, so as long as it lasts that long pump it up and ride it.

You could always find a screw, remove the offending object and screw the screw into your tyre for the ride to the garage. That should stop it leaking.

Meh.

Bet you administered sexual favours or something. Wink

(Only ever had one plug done, and I was on my dad's bike so I didn't pay.)

As others have said, get it plugged ... as you can see, you can get pretty big ones - they do last and unlike the temporary ones that you can DIY, there are no speed restrictions if a proper 'mushroom plug' type one (that a garage should fit). Thumbs Up

Thanks guys appreciated.

£30 notes for a fix is steep like but I suppose the labour for removing/refitting the wheel/tyre and the fix itself is probably not too bad Shocked

Will give the garage a ring in the morning and get a price

I still have my old BT021 rear if I had to use it Sick

ms51ves3: Would putting a screw in there not make it worse?

No seriously get thee a kit, the recommendation is that you do not go over 70mph with the plug in, my rear is plugged with a home made and I went to Spain exceeding 120 quite often. Im still here.

They don't have to take the tyre of the wheel. At least they didn't with me.

Guessing there's no chance you can take the wheel loose to them?

Then there's no labour other than the plug itself Razz Shop around rather than just head to the one place.

Nothing to support the bike with to get the wheel off, my mate has a car garage, gonna ask if he can sort it for me if the wheel doesn't need to come off the bike and it's a simple case of plugging it from the outside.

If you pull whatever is stuck in your tyre out, and then replace it with a wood screw that is slightly larger than it, it will seal the hole.

Proper mushrom plugs are fitted from the inside. I've been over 200mph on a tyre with one of those.

In that case it wasn't a 'mushroom' plug* - it will be one of the 'temporary' plugs they used ... which to be honest is a bit dodgy of them!! Confused

*they are/can only be fitted from the inside

Thing is is that I don't want to make the damage any worse, the tyre is an Avon Storm 2, I think it may be covered by the 1mm Road Hazard Warranty that Avon offer on these tyres (you get a puncture within the first 1mm of wear, if the tyre can't be repaired they give you a new one).
I may aswell see if what the craic is with that.

Really? never heard of that avon thang, i got a storm 2 that got totally fucked by a puncture on the M3, only had it a week and done less than 1000 miles on it, might be lucky i kept it.

I'd plug that puncture roadside and get on and forget about it

Yes avon offer that as a service to bikers on some of their tyre ranges. You have to pay for a new tyre though at the dealer then they send to punctured one off to Avon for inspection.
