I'm tidying up my bike a bit cosmetically and need to respray the frame now I've sanded off little bits of surface rust.
I'm just wondering whether it's best to try and sand off the remaining paint, prime it, use rattle cans from halfords, wet and dry sandpaper, lacquer etc etc or whether I'm likely to get a half decent finish just using hammerite rattle cans?
I'm not after a fantastic finish, just need to paint over the bits that have been sanded and get it all a uniform colour (colour matching seems futile as it's different colours of silver from age). I'm hoping for something that won't take me days of work and won't break the bank too much, hence thinking hammerite might do the trick.

Cheers. Not sure about brushing it on. Already used it on the swingarm, but the paint was next to impossible to use, very thick and gloopy. I'll have a go at the stippling technique, perhaps that was where I was going wrong.

Plastikote rattle cans.

Amazing stuff.

I did the engine covers on kats CB500 with satin black plastikote BBQ paint and they look great.

Lots of thin coats, you can recoat it every five minutes or so and it self smooths brilliantly.

You will get runs if you overdo it though.

Smoothrite is pretty good but as you've noticed, it is pretty gloopy (the solution would be to thin it down a bit using hammerite thinners). It also takes ages to harden properly. It'll be dry in about 48h but it can take weeks to fully harden. Splat it with muck in that period and it damages the paint.

Oh fanastic, I'll look into that, be useful for when I come to doing the engine (currently covered in flaking heaven knows what paint).
Yeh my swingarm does loo a bit of a mess from the gloop and the fact even the next day I accidentally kicked it and managed to smudge the paint. Never mind, it's an ugly swingarm anyway. I'll sand it down in a bit and have another shot at it.
