Just about to buy my first bike, I've got myself a pragmasis 16mm chain for home, and a 13mm for carrying around in.

How paranoid are people about what they lock their bike up to? Although it'll be out of side in the back yard, theres nowhere to bolt an anchor to (garden means you can't get a bike against the back wall).

The plan is to chain it to a 5 foot concrete fence post, the only problem is someone could rip the fence down then lift the chain off the top. Admittedly this would mean lifting the bike up 5 feet, and its a 125 varadero, so not light, but not impossible.

Basically I'm just looking for opinions as to how reasonable this sounds, I could probably concrete one into the floor, but it's only gravel, so other than the weight of the concrete there'd be nothing for it to grab to, is that going to be worth anything?

I would set a ground anchor for sure, but if you don't want to dig up about 12" to set a concrete ground anchor, dig up about 6" and use a bolt down ground anchor. Either way, i'm sure as a thief who REALLY wants it, they'll just rip the 12" block out of the ground as it's just surrounded by earth. Can you anchor it to the house?

Get a water but or something big like one, Then cut it in half, and pour in post-mix and water in both half's.

Then sink a chain in both buts then let it set. Then you can lock a chain to the chain connecting the buts of concrete, and your bike wont go anywhere unless their lifting the bike and 2 butts of concrete. Thumbs Up

If like me you haven't got a shed, then you could lift a slab. Dig it deep and either buy a proper ground anchor or bury a chain with a loop of the chain left above the surface of concrete.
Set a security light on it. Put a beware of the dog sign on your gate/fence.
Keep it covered.

But if they really want it, they'll take it.

To be honest, I just chuck my bike in the back garden, switch the fuel tap off, steering lock on, left in gear, cut-off switch 'off', cover it up and forget about it.

If someone nicks it from behind a locked 7ft hight gate/fence they're obviously determined enough and would nick it regardless of security on it, I'll buy a new bike with the insurance.

Access to my garden is only via the gate, which as said is 7ft tall, and only just wider than the bike Razz Not easy getting the bike out each day!

Round town I just chain it through the frame to stuff if available, if not I just use steering lock/disc lock and hope for the best.

As said before if someone wants it bad enough it's gone no matter how secure

Get a tumble dryer vent pipe at least 200KG concrete and some rebar. Dig a hole put the vent pipe in the hole in a U shape, openings level with ground level, add rebar then fill up hole with loads of concrete. If you want a surface other than concrete then leave a gap between the concrete at the top of the vent pipe.

Chain fits through vent pipe and is removable. All you get visible is 2 holes. Not thatcham or sold secure but I think an effective ground anchor with a neat finish.
