I've just bought a GPZ400r in need of restoration, and the bike is having problems starting-up!
When I bought the bike, I had the RAC come out to look at it, and he suggested that I need new ignition coils, so I ordered them and fitted them on, but it's not made a difference. I took a spark plug out today and had a look, it looked very clean but no spark was seen when I attempted to start the engine.
I then had a look at the IC Igniter and noticed that some of the pins were rusted, on the IC Igniter itself and the wire block. Coincidently, the wires which lead to both the ignition coils.
I then sanded some of the rust off but this made no difference. I was hoping someone could help me diagnose the problem as I'm trying to do all the work myself as I'm a student and haven't got that much cash!
And yes it does have fuel in and a fully charged battery!

Thanks for reading Wink

Hi Mibman, I got one of those and had an ignition problem. Thread is in the show and tell section. Have you got a haynes manual, if so, the electrical section for faultfinding is good. I followed it and sorted my problem out ( dead ignitor ) quite quickly.
Got any pictures of your bike?
Good luck.

Don't waste your time looking for a manual for the 400R.
I've had one for a couple of years and haven't even come close.
I have used a haynes GPZ600 & 750 manual and have done fine with this.
If you do have a manual i'd keep hold of it. It's rarer than a first edition of the bible

For the sake of your pocket, get in and check for loose connections and loose wires at the back of the connectors.

Quite often people are isolating components as faulty and finding out later after more patience and attention that something really simple has caused the problem.

Get in and ensure all your grounds are clean and well connected for future peace of mind.

Thanks for your advice guys...
Well, I cleaned my connections and sparkplugs and purchased some Bradex engine start. After many attempts, I finally got the bike to run for a short whille! I will now probably attempt to clean the carbs etc and get it running again, I've also purchased a GPZ600r Haynes manual and hopefully this will help me!
