Hello all,

Sorry for my first post to be in a bad light but I could do with some advice.

I purchased a 690 SMR in February from a local dealer. I decided to get the bike serviced for my piece of mind at our local KTM dealer so I booked it in and had the work completed on April 15th. The dealer themselves were not very customer minded and told me the service would be under £200 and less than 2 hours - it took 5 hours and costs over £200.

Yesterday riding to work the chain snapped on the bike. Luckily I stopped without mishap. When checking the bike over I noticed the chain had rust on the inside, the rear sprocket appeared badly worn. Also the chain has hit the swingarm and rear wheel, causing a gouge in the swingarm and chips in the rear wheel.

Would I have any case against the dealer with regards to this do you think? It is less than 2 weeks since the service was completed and I had no advisory on the chain/sprockets.

My intention is to approach the dealer for their response but would like to know my position first.

Thanks for reading,

Matt

Did you buy it brand new? Have you got a warranty certificate? If you say yes to either of those - then go back and tell them you would like them to rectify the problem please.

I am surprised the place you took it for a service didn't offer you a piece of friendly advice, although it's not under the remit of a service I suppose.

I probably would still go back to the dealership and give it a go, see what you can get out of them, although I doubt unless you bought it new or under warranty they will admit liability. It might be worth you buying the replacements, and finding yourself a trusted mechanic, someone who will look over the entire bike, and check nothing else is in dire need of replacing too.

These issues you are experiencing is EXACTLY why most people would advise you to take a mechanically minded person with you when you are looking at / buying a motorbike. Idea

Inspecting the chain and sprockets for wear is part of a service.
They should have picked up on any wear and consulted you, if they didnt do that then you have to wonder what else they didnt do..
