OK, this might be a really easy question to answer, but I cant think how to do it. Had a search, but nothing showed up.

How do you clean out\up coked up exhausts?

The most common method is to stop up one end, then fill the pipe with caustic soda mixed in cold water. Leave for a few hours, then carefully drain the CS out...and a large quantity of crap from within the pipe will come with it.

i have used oven cleaner or caustic soda before. check the label before using as most will eat aluminium. using it for exhaust may be a problem depending on what bike it is for

Well it is for a couple of my bikes, my R1 is coked a small amount, my GS is coked up a bit and the girlfriend's VFR is coked up so much, that when she parked it in front of a wheelie bin and started it up, it left black marks over the bin!

Looks like caustic soda is the way forward, will give that a try!

I normally use a blow torch & an air line

get the exhaust nice & hot so the coke inside starts to smolder & there's smoke coming out of it then blow a slow & steady stream of air through it

if you got it hot enough there will be shed loads of smoke come out of the end & you'll hear a rummbling sound from inside the pipe as the coke burns off

WTF are you running the bikes on.... creosote???

Not one of those 3 bikes should need to have the exhaust decoked. Rolling Eyes

+1

I thought decoking was normally a 2T thing??

No way any of those should need decoking, especially a 2008 R1!

Hmmm, well the R1 has just a small amount of soot in the cans, but the VFR is pretty bad as I explained. Using normal 95 Unleaded.

Thinking

possibly time to have a look at the carbs on the VFR as it is quite probably running rich. either that or you are leaking oil. how is the oil usage

Definitely no oil leaks, the oil use is normal. The carbs running rich is a good possibility as I had to change the last set of carbs due to missing parts.

So, I guess it is time to find out how to balance carbs properly, as I expect that job in a garage is over £100?

Thumbs Up

Just cause there's soot in the exhaust doesn't mean they are choked. I ruined a lovely pair of white slacks when I was stood standing behind my brothers Firestorm one day.. Embarassed

Normal running, start-up, ticking over in traffic et cetera will produce a certain amount of soot from unburned fuel and sacrificed engine lubrication. But proper use of the machine will burn this off by heat and the gas flow through the exhaust system.

How is the performance?

Do these machines have a high mileage? I'm sure you wouldn't need to bother with anything under 100k. If high miles then maybe the engines need overhaul.

Short Commutes will be the worst treatment though.

I would take the bike out the back (roads) and kick it's fucking cunt in for about half a tank.
You will resolve most issues of that sort of carbon/slobber build up that way. Laughing

But if you think it will help: https://www.boots.com/en/Boots-Caustic-Soda-500g_923900/?CAWELAID=334516099&cm_mmc=Shopping%20Engines-_-Google%20Base-_---_-Boots%20Caustic%20Soda%20500g

R1 is 100% with 160000 miles

GS is running about 75% with 40000 miles, it's my commuter, don't really care about it.

VFR has 40000 miles and this is the performance;

Ignore the clutch slipping at 90 mph, that was me trying to make it do more.

The VFR is an NC24, no?
I had my old one dynoed years ago, and it was running very rich despite a clean air filter and no good reason to be rich.

Carb balance is unlikely to be the problem, carb wear or settings out is more likely. The correct way to sort it is to remove the carbs, strip and clean and check and set every component as it should be, or replace jets and needles to be sure.
The realistic way to sort it is to ignore the rich running and sooty can, it's an NC24. It'll self destruct in a few months anyway.

4 strokes shouldn't need decoking. On an NC24, with a fragile collector box made of rust and hate, I wouldn't want to disturb the exhaust at all if I could avoid it.

160k is geriatric.
It's still putting out power as the fuel system is compensating.

Rings and valve overhaul will sort it.

Or a 1/2 gallon two pack overhaul (with an oven baked cure) and a set of decals off ebay and punt it to some unfortunate unsuspektur. Cool

That was a race track you were on? Yes? Smile

Of course it was, where else would you ride a VFR like that?

Ahh that's good to know how to solve the issue with the power loss AND the sooty cans.

Thanks, you have been an awesome help!

Thumbs Up Very Happy

Yeah, I know, but it works for now and my mate is going to look at the valves and do the carbs for me, well it's for my girlfriend, and it's her first bike, so she is not going to rag it everywhere as we would. Wink
