What is the most reliable bike you've ever had?

What is the most unreliable bike you've ever had?

I had a DT100 from like '89 and apart from taking a while to start it was a motherfucking soldier, it got crashed, rode through rivers, stolen and recovered, almost every seal on the bike was far from sealed and it still soldiered on until it got stolen 6 years after I bought it. (Of course that can't be classed as reliable, I've only had experiences with unreliable)

Most unreliable is my second moped, Speedfight 100, it went wrong from the day I bought it from new. Tickover was wrong when I bought it, to set off I had to keep the revs on for about 5 seconds for it to battle through bogging down then shoot off, everything to do with the exhaust fell off/snapped/broke, carb was dodgy, kept fouling plugs, drivebelt snapped about 4 times, rollers fucked up, kickstart decided to mangle itself and was(still is) wrote off, electric start didn't work for a while, I went through a stage where I could only kickstart the bike for whatever reason, when I did it was easy from cold but once it got hot it was impossible to kickstart, this was especially annoying for filling it up with petrol as I'd have to fill it up then push it home :/

will never give up his CG. I look at my fuel gauge more as a progress bar than a fuel gauge.
G: With my GSXR I do often effectively use it as a scooter with a clutch in town.

My kawasaki EN450 ltd was a real gem.
Had it for 14 years. Went through winters on it, put it in the odd ditch although it was my fault. Dropped a bolt down the spark plug hole and in a basil fawlty moment of madness put the bike upside down and shook the thing hoping it would fall out.
Left standing for several months at a time.
But it never failed a mot ond i would only have to charge the battery and it would fire up and tick over sweet as a nut.

I miss that bike

Yamaha WR400 F.
Thrown down hills / dunked in thigh high water / ragged at the top of its revs on the road / serviced 1 out of every 5th recommended interval / left in garage soaking wet and muddy.

Never failed to start.
Never broken down.

The TDM has been pretty solid, I have done 20,000 relitively trouble free miles (has 39 on the clock), aside from consumables it needed a set of coils, and I think that was it.


The Speed Four has been allright no major problems but it has only done 14,000 miles

The RXS was good had 8k out of that (39k on the clocks) and it wanted nothing it was still on the same plug as when I got it.

Most reliable bike I've ever had was probably my Triumph Daytona 955i. I used it every day in all weathers all year round and it never missed a beat. Never even had a flat battery despite having a totally rubbish Datatool Veto Evo alarm. I've had other bikes which always start on the button and have never let me down, but not that I've ridden so much.

The least reliable is clearly my MZ.
The gearbox stuck me in fifth coming off of the M4 once, which meant I had to try to push the bike home from the motorway junction.

The battery has gone flat and as its a newfangled electronic ignition version it wouldn't start.

The kick start spring was broken when I bought it making starting rather difficult.

The Kick start retaining pin worked its way loose meaning that I couldn't start the bike unless I did it in one kick. That improved my kickstarting technique no end!

The gearbox output shaft seal has blown meaning that oil runs along the chain (through the enclosed chain gaiters) and drips onto the back wheel.

The clutch started to slip after I replaced the kickstart spring

The plug fouled not long after I got it and the head gasket was blowing for aaages.

Taking "most reliable" as "always starts, never broken down", then...

GT550. I bought this from new, so really didn't expect any problems, and got none.

1963 AJS 350. Always started (eventually - you couldn't rush it and had to do it just so. If you didn't, it would sit there defiantly, mocking your weak starting skills.) Never broke down.

CB500. Only let me down once when the battery finally gave up attempting to hold a charge. It was way overdue replacing, so I couldn't really blame the bike.

Royal Enfield Bullet 500. Owned it from new, never let me down but in the early days whilst the clutch was bedding in it would drag, causing me to stall numerous times when crawling in traffic. Was ok once the clutch cable finished stretching

XJ900F. Only broke down once in torrential rain, water in carbs, airbox, everywhere. Had to strip it to get it going again, after being recovered back home. Only bike to ever have a puncture on. Otherwise, started every time, no mechanical faults.

GPZ750/1000RX. Let me down once when an oil feed pipe split, but it got me home.

BMW R100RT. Nice bike, it hated being left for more than a few weeks without starting. It refused to start too many times for my liking, really needed to be either ridden daily or have an Optimate setup.

CB250RS. Failed a few times; a snapped throttle cable, the left footpeg hanger sheared off leaving the gearchange mechanism dangling and the exhaust studs finally stretching past the point of no return, leaving the header pipes free to rattle loosely. Each time bodgery got the bike home.

CB100N. Would regularly stall and refuse to start. Timing would always drift out, so would have to redo it at the side of the road or have to stick to 40mph max. At least it was a light bike to push.

The most reliable would probably be my ZZR600, I did close to 20k on that thing and in that time it blew a rear bulb and snapped a speedo cable. If anything I think the complete lack of drama and fuss about it was what made me replace it, too reliable and soulless for it's own good

The GS kind of deserves an honorable mention, it's only failed to start when it got so cold the choke cable got frozen solid and the battery ran flat

Most unreliable? The Futura edges it for simply not starting (gogo italian electrics), whereas whilst the SP1 didn't leave me stranded as often, when it did it was usually expensive

Once I'd gone over it and replaced all the shitty, soft bolts. My Motobeno (minsk) 125 never failed to get me there, always started even in extreme low temperatures and generally soldiered on. The thing that eventually killed it (two owners later) was being run over by a lorry. It still started and ran but was bananna-shaped.

Most unreliable was my 375cc Yamaha powervalve. Spent more time off the road than on it. It was however a total hoot to ride when it was both running and I could afford to keep it in petrol.

i had it from the when it was 8, i got thrashed, crashed, drowned, chased by the police, and it never let me down 10 years after i first got it i gave it its first rebore, (it hadn't broken down, i just decided it deserved it)
apart from that it never got maintained, and until i removed the engine for a portable wood mill when i was 25, it was still on the original chain.
the engine is still running to this day 22 years after i first got it.

pretty damn good bike, still starts first or second kick

Kawasaki ZX6R was probably the most reliable bike I've had. Other than the blown engine (which was due to a wrecked air filter which i neglected to change), I've never had to rely on breakdown cover, whereas I've required it twice on the Blade despite it being a newer bike with less miles! So much for honda quality! Least reliable was the piaggio NRG which used to not start periodically.. bulbs would blow.. choke wouldn't turn off. That kinda stuff.

my XR has done me proud! nearly done 10,000 miles in 15 months of owning it and its never failed to get me home! burnt the clutch out once when i got stuck off road. but it still got me home!

MY '00 CG was a very cheap bike to run. done 7k in a year on that. (had 30k on the clock when i brought it) all i replaced was the chain in that year of owning that CG. Some fucker nicked that bike from outside my work

Id pick the XR over a CG as they are pretty much the same bike but the XR looks better and does handle light off roading quite well

I've had lots of bikes that were doggedly reliable and never let me down despite endless hard use. The best of which were CX500, 600 Revere, MZ251, GT550 and the good old RXS100.

Best is current pan european, 59000 miles in a year and a week and it's only ever failed to start when i left alarm in run mode and flattened the battery, only non running incident was a dodgy wheel bearing just before christmas that made it feel like front wheel was locking up and was not a good plan so took the car that day

Most unreliable is a close call between>
yamaha rd200 twin which ate pistons for a passtime and bent clutch push rods with the power of thought. Spent more time pushing it than anything.

BMW K1100 LT, bought it with about 35000 on it, almost weekly it was having the abs reset at dealer, the starter initiated itself on the M4 and fucked everything, the handling made it feel like it was flexing on fast bends and was just generally a piece of shit that made me vow to never ever touch a beemer bike ever again, the finality came at 3am on the bristol to bath road when i changed gear and the whole lot self destructed leaving me to sit on the side of the dual carriageway waiting to be picked up.
Took it all apart and tipped the contents of the box onto a bench.
The bike was put to sleep then, rip fucking rubbish. it had under 45k when it died.

The bike that never let me down was my RS125. I ragged it senseless the whole time I used to ride it. It has across fields, through knee deep water and just about anywhere you can fit a bike. It used to get bunny hopped off every speedbump, stoppied at regular intervals and wheelied wherever it could. It was used countless times 2 up and I used to give it a good burnout whenever the time was right (I got quite good at standing off it and getting it to spin round).

It always worked though, even though just about everything failed on it. The electrics would sometimes work and sometimes not, although it always bumpstarted easily (even if no lights worked the engine would fire up). It leaked oil from the crankcase and the clutch slipped so much that a running start was sometimes needed. The gear linkage snapped so I was riding it around in 3rd gear for nearly 3 weeks(that is what knackered the clutch). One of the rearsets got snapped off in a lowside and I managed to do well over 200 miles using my crashbung as a rearset. Gearbox used to select neurtal at the most innapropirate times and the rearshock was so soft from all the abuse it used to bottom out whenever I hit a grain of sharp sand.

My first GSXR750 was the most reliable bike I've had. In the three years I owned it I changed the oil and put a back tyre on it, that is all.

Worst was either my Bandit 400 (endless problems with the carbs making it run ruch, which fouled the plugs so it wouldn't start, then a float stuck which tried to immolate me and the bike in a filling station), or my CD185/200 shed (original engine blew up F1 stylee, replacement was just as slow and used to suffer sticking throttle and electrical gremlins because the whole loom was rotting).

my ns125

did 17 thousand miles on it over 2 years. did 600 mile round trips. looked like a pile of turd but went well. sounded loud. onlythign that ever broke was a clutch cable and some spark plugs. amazing bike no matter what the weather just go out and kick her and away we go!
