I need to replace the indicators on my bike (CB-1). By the looks of it one has cracked and to stop water getting it's been covered in electrical tape and then the indicators have been swapped over and wired in upside down so the crack is facing downwards not up. So this needs sorting as it's a bit of a mess, not to mention a very dodgy earth somewhere in the wiring.

So I wondering what are the advantages of going for LED over bulb indicators? I'm just wondering whether it's worth the extra expense and fathing around with resistors or a relay?

Whichever I get I'll be going for smaller after market ones as I'm sick of bashing past my current brick shaped ones everytime I go into the garage. My thighs always seem covered in indicator height bruises.

leds benefit from lower draw (less power used) and lastability.

easily offsets the cost of buying a new flasher relay.

but then.. how often to indicator bulbs really blow? Smile

swings and roundabouts really

LED indicators are more 'directional' than conventional bulbs, so mini indicators are even less useful, even if they look cool. Better to be seen, in my humble opinion.

However, if you go for LEDs, be sure that they are a direct replacement for your bulbs. Your indicator relay relies on the load of the two (front and back) indicators to make it work. Thus, the lower power LED indicators offer no power saving, as they require the extra resistors to keep the system nominal.

Cheers guys.
I wouldn't be getting the really mini indicators, they look odd in my opinion, I just want ones slightly smaller and less sticky outy than my current ones.

You can of course get a electronic flasher relay.

The flash rate is set by solid state electronics so the flash rate is independent of the electrical load.

Hence you can have LED indies and make a good power saving.
