QUestion about old mopeds

WOuld I be right in thinking some of these old mopeds have no battery and basically all the power is generated form the engine?

We've got a old Tomos moped and I can't seem to find a battery or even a place for one, when turning the engine over on the kick start theres a spark etc but I'm just wondering if the lights etc are all going to be powered when the engine is running.

The most confusing thing for me was the fact it has ni key ignition or actual ignition at all.

Yea the older ones, all the power runs from the magneto, i had a 1974 garelli katia monkey bike which was the same.

The lights etc should run off the magneto when the engine is running, unless there is a place for abattery dont worry about it.

Yep would seem thats the case. I was only asking as the guy who dropped the bike off was getting it confused with another his wife had had.

He couldn't remember if he had disconnected the battery or if it had gone flat, "there again it could be a different bike I'm thinking about".

Shouldn't be too hard to get the thing up and running then.

nah nothing to em, pissy little 2 stroke motor , tiny carb nothing to it.

i almost got mine running but the points and condenser in the magneto were shagged, i was only 14 so i sold it for £30 for the whole bike!

Then i realised 2 months later there was only 100 ish left in the uk and i could have got a few hundred for it because it was mint condition, only 3000 mile!!

yeah well if it is, keep it in good nick and that in a few years would be worth a fair few hundred.

The tomos mopeds are not the rarest but if its one of th elast made it will be worth a bit.

Tomos moped were made in Yugoslavia. Lots of factories there got destroyed! They also used to sell them from Woolworths.

Plenty of bikes will run without a battery. Most you can get away with just running a resistor in place of the battery (just don't expect the electric start to work).
